just wondering as booked melb - syd using the free return amex flight for myself and used the $129 voucher from my virgin visa to go towards my daughters flight.

Unless it has changed, you just apply the $129 from Virgin Money during the payment process. Doesn't affect any of the points earning.

Amex no as its basically a reward booking, virgin visa voucher yes as it is a payment method of a regular booking.
 
I can definitely confirm that there is no earning on Amex free flights. Below is the posting on my Velocity account from my recent trip using that method.

ah well hopefully i get the points from my daughters booking. managed to get a cheap upgrade to business and use the lounge for the first time too, this being gold thing is great....

Yes, the flight paid using the $129 Virgin visa voucher should earn. I'm pretty sure mine did when I used it. As others have said, it is just the same as if you paid for the flight via any other normal method. Glad you are enjoying the benefits.
 
No on the Amex free flight but as others have pointed out on the voucher should be as normal.

Some AFFers have had success having the free flights crediting to Krisflyer miles, but didn't when I tried on mine SYD-MEL.

Perhaps only works if its a codeshare...
