Do you always select the seat if available?

I go best available that can be chosen. I fly last minute a lot so dont usually get much choice. I find myself usually going for the left side of the plane, no idea why - some freudian thing I am sure.

I once started a crossword in the QF mag on a PER-ADL trip in 4A.......finished it on the way back (same seat, same aircraft, same mag!!) Made me think that I tend to choose the same seat a lot!

Ha, brilliant. I think this post wins the thread so far :D

As long as you allocate something. It's amazing how many pax (particularly WP's & SG's) don't pre-allocate anything at all thinking that having a generic request for an aisle or window seat in their profile is some kind of ironclad guarantee that they'll get it.

Good, I'm hoping that they don't cotton onto this seat allocation business as it make its easier for me to get what I want :)

I definitely choose a seat ... otherwise you could be stuck in the middle seat with someone on both sides!
With domestic QF it’s a given you want to be as far forward as possible ... unless you’re gambling that everyone else wants the same, so you choose something up the back to avoid someone sitting next to you (the better-half is QF Platinum & the fact I’d put her in row 27 of a possible 30 on a Melbourne flight had a couple of the hosties commenting about how surprised they were to see her back there).
With Virgin you take the gamble ... most people want to be further forward, and in good weather they board through front+rear, so Row 29 rocks. But then if it rains, they don’t open the back doors & you’re stuck with an extra 15-minute effective flight duration.
