Do prices come down or do they only go up?

I watched in dismay yet again to see the sale fares for a QF SIN-SYD return go up immediately after I had timed out half-way through my booking. The travel is for outbound Jan and inbound (to SIN) in April.

Do people know whether once you've missed the low fares that that's it - it's gone, or is there any chance that the cheaper fares will come back again. Also wonder whether there are certain times during the day / week when fares are higher than at other times - ie they go up and down depending on the time/day you check (I have seen that happen on other airlines when I was living in Europe). Then there's the question of whether QF looks at IP addresses (ie if you are checking the fares constantly, the system thinks you're a willing buyer and holds back any lower fares)? Maybe I'm just paranoid.

In a sale, a certain amount of seats will be offered for a certain price. If these sell out, there's nothing to say that a future sale can't reintroduce more seats at the same price, or lower/higher, as I recently found out when I didn't book in one month, but then did the following month.

Yield management is all about maximising revenue for the transport operator, concert ticket agency and so on.

The It systems of airlines that have been around for a while should be able to recognise flights (and individual classes, plus fare buckets i.e. T class in whY) that are selling at the rate expected, or slower, or faster. I assume that this may be at least partly based on history: did last year's flights on the third Tuesday in October show excellent sales in the morning but not so good in the afternoon; is this pattern being repeated this year and if not what do we need to do to increase the chance of faster sales?

Someone reported recently that certain companies charge more if it's detected the user on on a tablet or mobile app vs a desktop computer.

Are you using the QF Australian website to book or some other means?

I don't know whether you've seen the following thread but it may be worth reading first before making a purchase elsewhere.

Yes - I have been checking out that site as well but it looks largely like the 'loophole' is gone (although there's still probably a little bit cheaper, but not quite as much as it used to be).

Looks like I've missed the QF sale then. It's now a decision of whether to act now or hope another sale comes on.

Airfares constantly fluctuate.

I have seen October-December SYD-BNE airfares on sale with limited availability at $99 and these dates have since been on sale much cheaper with wide open availability.
