I am booking a flight in P class (discounted business) on Singapore and Luftansa which should give me over 25,000 pqm, enough for qualify for star alliance silver. However, it looks like you need 4 qualifying segments on United itself to qualify. Is this right? Is there anyway around it? I am worried about crediting to Krisflyer because of the 3 year expiry. Any other ideas?

Unfortunately, "Yes". But Oz residents don't require the min $ spend.

You could send them to SQ with the option to transfer to VA if you can't use them before they would expire.
