Ok, so due to a schedule change we now have a superfluous SYD-MEL flight in J on a ticket booked using reward points (see screenshot of MMB)

What do I get back if I cancel it - just some taxes and charges?

It looks like I might be able to do that online instead of via call centre as per screenshot

I am not cancelling it until I have the boarding pass for both flights, and even then I won’t try until in the lounge at NRT (too risky to mess with the booking before then)

Be careful with cancelling one leg as it might cancel the entire reward booking and you can't get it back due to lack of reward seats them and some rules about married segments

You might have to do this on the phone with call centre but there r stories of incompetence there too so just be very sure with the operator that if they stuff it up they will reinstate the booking without penalty. Hope it works out

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Would it be possible to request that they not check you in for the SYD to MEL leg at JFK? Then, you can at least attempt to cancel it either in mid-air with inflight wifi onboard JL773 (spicy) or right after you land in Melbourne.

I'm honestly shocked it's letting you cancel a partially flown itineary. In my past experience it usually greys all those out since refunds etc. for partially flown itinearies require manual calculation.

They won't be able to check in for the QF flight, considering the JL flight lands in MEL and the QF flight departs SYD.

Can you potentially capitalise on this and move the final segment to a future date after you arrive in Melbourne? Even with a change fee it still makes for an almost no cost one way domestic J ticket!

Doubt it, once moved away from the international connection it would be repriced and you'd be up for the full amount of points. No change fees at the moment though.

Don't. Touch. It.

It's the last leg.
Even as the last leg don’t touch it?

I also have a window of time once we are on the ground in MEL (hopefully land 07:55, the SYD-MEL leg is 10:30). Thoughts on trying then?

Does anyone know how much cash refund that I would theoretically receive?

I thought somebody said. ‘Don’t. Touch. It.’

On further reflection, I’m going to have to seek a refund of points (if it doesn’t come through automatically) on this booking as one leg I had with CX was downgraded from first to business with an aircraft change. So I’ll just ask also for the domestic taxes and charges to be refunded at the same time (after I no show)

Qantas did themselves out of a little money - could have sold those J seats to other customers. I am mean so this pleases me 😂

I believe once you’ve commenced travel on an award booking, it’s no longer refundable? (not 100% sure but I believe there are no refunds once travel has commenced, hence one-ways are always good options).

Check out the question marks in the conditions when I looked at the page to cancel the syd to mel leg !

I’m going to give it a go as there is no real downside now that I’m on the ground in MEL. Will see if any cash refund comes back automatically
