Hi all! Because of a few unexpected international business class trips, I now have enough status credits for Gold on Qantas. However, I only have 2 flights on Qantas metal. If I use my points to book a flight to Sydney and back (from Canberra), will that give me the other 2 flights that I need to qualify for Gold? Or do these flights have to be paid for?

thanks for any help you can give!

Short answer: no

Long answer: yes, if you book an any seat award. Classic awards do not count.

Thanks for the quick help. One other question. If I fly on Qantas metal, but it's codeshared through another airline, that is probably not going to count as an eligible sector, correct?

Any flight that earns SCs counts if its a QF flight number, but not the other way around, it must be a QF flight number.
