Someone was making a point against me some time ago that VA don't have YQ? Unless they just roll it into their base fare.

Virgin Blue

Baggage

Prepaid raised from $10 to $12

Looks like the several who took advantage of status matches here have instantly saved themselves an additional $2...

Paid at airport raised from $20 to $40  (Virgin Blue)
Paid at airport raised from $40 to $60 (Pacific Blue)

Ouch.

Still, probably better than turning up to the airport with a JQ JetSaver Light ticket, then having to pay fare difference to "upgrade" to a JetSaver ticket.

Excess fees raise from $10 to $15

Couldn't care about this, although the recently-lauded "fairness of charges" test might be applied (mind you, if they did, QF is in a much worse condition to defend these).

Couple a few of these with the increased credit card surcharges..... well, at least it should be good for the Virgin group's capital expenditure.

At a guess, it may be a Q surcharge in the fare construction. Thai do something similar for fares ex-Australia.

Here as well:

Ouch: Virgin Blue doubles baggage fees

Virgin Blue is doubling its some of its baggage charges as part of a move to recoup rising fuel costs.
From March, passengers who have booked on a Virgin Blue Go or Blue Saver (no baggage) fare and then decide they want to check baggage, or are forced to by Virgin Blue due to their cabin baggage being overweight, will now have to pay $40 at the airport rather than $20.

Increase in the checked luggage fee? It was only increased to $10 recently!

Forget to prepay for checked luggage (or for some reason be forced to check luggage at airport i.e overweight carry-on) and you are in deep trouble. Almost as much as the cost of the airfare.

And people still think that DJ is cheaper?

JohnK,

The usual applies. Do not let a good story get in the way of the truth. $10 pre paid is changing to $12 and $20 at the airport is changing to $40.

Not an issue for those who are Gold as it is free.

I try to be fair and do not include the benefits of a QF Gold/Platinum either. Most of the people who have gained DJ Gold status via the status match will not have it for much longer than expiry of the status match.

On QF checked luggage is complimentary for a nobody. DJ decides they want to charge (yes has been happening for a while) for checked baggage and now is increasing these charges by 20% prepaid and 100% for paying at the airport.

If this were QF people would be claiming price gouging. Should we allow DJ a little more leeway?

Hot on the heals of the Qantas increase, DJ have announced further increases in fuel surcharges

Brisbane, 14 March 2011: Virgin Blue Group of Airlines today announced it would increase fares and international fuel surcharges in response to further rises in global fuel prices.
Virgin Blue announced international fuel surcharges and increases to baggage charges on 17 February, since then, jet fuel prices have risen by a further 10% to more than US$130 per barrel.
Virgin Blue Group of Airlines CEO and Managing Director John Borghetti said that high fuel prices would have a significant impact on the operating costs of airlines worldwide.
“Oil prices are reaching increasingly high levels, with the average price of Singapore Jet Fuel rising by around 50% since September 2010, from US$88 a barrel to US$131”. Mr Borghetti said.
The following changes will apply to tickets sold from 21 March 2011:

  • • International long haul fuel surcharges on V Australia flights will increase as follows:
o Los Angeles and other USA destinations will change from AUD$115 each way to AUD$165 each way.
o Abu Dhabi/Europe/UK will change from AUD$220 each way to AUD$240 each way.
    • International short haul fares on Pacific Blue and Polynesian Blue flights will increase by up to AUD$20 per sector. Exact increases will vary according to sector.
    • Domestic fares will increase by between AUD$6 and $10 per sector. Exact increases will vary according to sector.
