Lots have speculated how it works, last night I had an hour to spare in a very sparse "The lounge"
and thought I'd ask a couple a reasobale questions.
Background day trip to MEL travelled down Blue daver ..nice and cheap but returned Corp Plus to see if there is a diff between that and fully flexfare.
Used the online Chkin right at the 24 hr mark for both flts
Only diff was Blue saver offered mid section of the plane (row 8 back or there abouts)..got 8D on a 737-700 and got what I thought pretty good value for the price.
The return Corp plus (now remember this is significantly higher than fully flex)
benefits basically lounge access, excess luggage..how many day trippers who would use this fare wud do that???and access to the "suitzone..whatever that is.Lounge is $30.00 single entry..no luggage hope the value would be in the seating
Online checkin offered the front 2 zones row1-row 15..behinf the wing anyway. But at the 24hr mark no seats except centre seats avail in the first 4 rows..best could do row5D.
The informative bit was a discussion with DJ staffer in the lounge who explained that lots of people were dissapointed that they cudnt get the fwd section of the flight when checking in online.he said is basically spreads you out on checkin based on weights and balances..For the money thelounge was an Oasis because noone was there not because it was that special..the same old bathrooms from the goldenwings lounge appear still to be there looking tired.
value for money at full afre...nope..I wouldnt bother again paying absolutely any more on DJ than needed as the benifit doesnt warrant the cost
I get a better hit rate with seating (admitedly Gold FF)
DJ have improved but they are still pretenders to being a business focused airline

Only flown DJ twice; MEL-BNE and BNE-MEL; last month.

First was a $165 fare and was preallocated 12F; was able to change online to 13C. (FWIW aisle seat are good on short flights such as these (BNE/OOL/MCY-MEL I have had over 150 flights in the last 14 years).

I was only shown the back two part of the aircraft for selection.

Return was an $85 fare and with OLCI I was again given 12F, but was able to choose from many seat from all rows; 2c was my immaculate selection.

Both flights flew nearly full which is the opposite of my presumptions gviven the original seat pre-allocations, especially the second.

Perhaps the second was full of people on low fares, while the first had a significant number of people on the higher flexible fares?

I've only ever flown DJ on the cheapest fares available, and have never had to sit further back than row 4 (always an aisle, too).

Better airline (and much cheaper) than QF where the two compete on routes.

I have a relatively tiny sample to quote from, but for me, any seat forward of row 10 was unavailable for OLCI in my inaugural DJ flight.

I was quite happy with 2C on my second DJ flight.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Usually happy with the seat option Web check-in provides. Most times get a window seat (good for resting the head whilst snoozing) in the front section.
Always book blue saver or sale fares, it was only last time that I flew VB 2 weeks ago that I didn't have any window seat options in the front section, ended up in 15A.:p
