Disappointing, Qantas

Got to say this looks like an increasingly rare blip. I do the Perth-BNE at least twice a month and have noticed a sustained improvement. I even started a thread commenting on the improvement in the qaulity and choice of catering. Not to say that things can't and won't go wrong.
Equally, my one experienceon DJ was pretty good too.

I've done a few J, SYD-PER this year and have to say, overall, l'm very impressed. I have left positive feedback to QF on a number of occasions and received follow-up e-mails/calls. Also, I did leave feedback for QF that maybe 2 varieties of red would be nice in J, instead of 1, as the red on offer was terrible, the wine in Y might have even been better on that occasion....

The biggest griped to me flying transcon is the fleet inconsistency.

The fish pie is actually awesome
+1
I was pleasantly surprised and the white wine that went with it was superb.

I flew QF J MEL-PER two days ago. The catering was pretty awful. Entree of Prawn Salad,

one of the prawns had not been properly prepared and after picking out the prawn intestines I decided not to bother eating any more. I asked for a Chardonnay with my entree and prior to the main course was offered a re-fill but instead I asked for a Shiraz, as did the gentleman in the seat beside me. His glass was swapped and Red poured a few minutes later, whilst mine was completely forgotten about.
The main, beef with risoni and broccolini was atrocious. Oily sauce, beef with gristle, and they served myself and 1B each others different mains.
Fawlty Towers airways
I'm reasonably used to good QF J Service but this was not an example I'd care to have again.
I'm busy teaching this weekend, hoping to have a better flight home tomorrow and will provide email feedback on the Thurs flight.

A perfect example of inconsistent service standards that QF is known for. The next time you might receive an average service and suddenly you might feel QF is very good. Anyone who pays a premium price for a trip should not be put in position to have anything but a fantastic experience after all that is why the PAX has paid more than double for the trip...and of course being able to reach your final destination a few seconds earlier!!!

...and the rest...

Does anyone actually pay full price J?

If the Queen doesn't eat seafood while travelling, why should any airline thrust it upon its customers?
Agreed that seafood is not always the best option in flight but there have been times, on AY business and CX business, where I could not refuse the fish option and I wasn't wrong.

And then last trip I had fish at Hilton Hua Hin for breakfast and had terrible indigestion all day.

2)Can l ask, how old are you, or an age bracket?
I'm in the 25-35 bracket and feel that because l'm younger than the average in J flyer and wear casual clothing, get treated differently in J. Not saying this as a DYKWIA, but the older suits get more attention and what-not. I have had drink orders never turn up, slow food delivery, etc etc...but when l look around the cabin, others are getting it dished out and looked after. Makes you wonder.
I am only a year and a few months past your age bracket and I have the same experiences as you in domestic business class.

But to be fair Virgin are still behind with their offering. See if anything has changed when I have OOL-SYD return next weekend.

Pleased to report that the trip back was excellent. 747 16A Upper Deck, older international crew. Personal greeting from the CSM, served all meals and drinks as asked. Mushroom soup entree ( I know there are differences of opinion on here but I like the mushroom soup), chose the Fish Pie for main, perfectly steamed carrots and broccoli on the side. There was a notable difference in service between this flight and the flight last week.

The article says she doesn't eat shellfish. There is a big heap of seafoods that are not shellfish, including fish pie. So she may, in fact, eat seafood.

My experience last week on Virgin in J, on the way to Perth, was miles better than the Qantas return trip (in fact better than any of my recent experiences Qantas J, never mind the unfortunate return trip from Perth).

The service was spot on, the plane brand new, French champagne before take off, lovely amenities kit, much bigger screens for the entertainment system, and a choice for each of the three courses of dinner, with a choice of wines as well (Qantas only had one sparkling, and one red, not sure about the white). The only thing Qantas does better is the blanket - the Virgin blanket was a bit thin and flimsy for my liking.

And I'm not generally a huge fan of Virgin, as a general rule I prefer to fly Qantas, but that may be changing!

On a more general note, I did hear back from Qantas with an offer of recompense that soothed me somewhat - a domestic upgrade I can use on any route at any time in the next 12 months (subject to availability).

(subject to availability).

I thought the requirements on the Space Available upgrade a little onerous. I have one to use, and, unsurprisingly, would want to use it on the MEL-PER route. No guarantees at the time of booking though.

I think that Virgin is trying to put all wide-bodies on the transcon route. (I could be wrong)

VA, trying for consistency.

With QF, tired old 767 (which will be getting a makeover), multiple A330 variants (from Y+ to proper J) to 747.
QF, flip a coin....

Yeah, I probably won't use it Melbourne to Perth for that reason - I'd rather use a Virgin confirmed upgrade. I'll probably end up using it Melbourne to Brisbane - long enough for it to be worth upgrading, not so long that I'll worry too much about being stuck in economy if I don't get it.

Exactly my thinking! (Mind you having said that it will be difficult for me not to fly DJ with the half price and WP complimentary upgrades.)

Paying considerably more, I'd have thought! But there are a lot of people who don't eat fish - surely a good reason to carry more of the other meal, if you're only going to have two choices (and I note there were three main meal options on Virgin in J)
I actually have started not upgrading to (or buying even!) Domestic J class anymore because of this. I'm allergic to Fish and Seafood so on every second flight I end up with the boring salad or a Y class meal if the salad is out. I don't want something vegetarian or whatever either so I usually end up happier in row 4 Y than up the front.

Really? I've just left that age bracket and almost ALWAYS travel in casual clothes unless I gotta run straight into a work meeting upon arrival which I try to avoid. Never had I encountered this kind of problem on Qantas, not even with the older dragons you sometimes get or on my occasional upgrades to F. Rather the opposite I find on QF. And I do know what you mean- on other occasions it has happened to me a dozen times.
