”Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil will from Wednesday also end a requirement for people coming into the country – Australian citizen or not – to complete a digital passenger declaration, saying the government had listened to feedback about the app’s problems.

“While in time it will replace the paper-based incoming passenger card, it needs a lot more work to make it user-friendly,” she said.”

This and the vax BS being gone is the greatest news ever!

Greatest news for the time being, but bet you it will come back with enhancements/improvement/what they call these 2.
Maybe under the new system, what ever they (ALP) might call it/change the name of the whole agency to make it less military like, they might do without having to use the phone to read the passport chip, and not needing a selfie, might be a good thing to have.
Will have to wait and see.
Who knows what name the ALP will come up for the agency, maybe change back to a "service" rather than a force.

Yes, I worked for the Australian Customs Service for 24 of my 37 years there. Once politicians of both sides saw vote gaining opportunities in a 'force'
allowing lots of posturing and belligerent speech making everything changed. Happily I retired just before this happened. Of course it was not perfect but far less imperfect than the current structure. I may just be falling into the trap of "it was all better in my day" but I don't think so.

Hooray, that expensive, clunky DPD app is being scrapped, as of 6 July. I heard this on tv news Sun night, but only in passing, so went searching this morning for confirmation:

And once more for certainty:

variously a 60 or 75 million dollar flop.

I think its going to be resurrected sometime as a replacement for the incoming passenger card.

Yep. The minister specifically said that this will happen, but only once the DPD is made a lot more user friendly.

Now, if only NZ will take away the need to hand out 2 RAT (covid test kits) out to each arriving pax, and do the DIY on day 0/day 1, I would book to get to ZQN for my first time visit to this town this Oct.
Also the NZ pax declaration.
