Today i booked two seats BNE-CBR-BNE, one via QFF and one via Flying Blue (Air France). The taxes and charges via QFF were $86.42, however the taxes and charges via FB were $124. Is there a logical explanation for this?

My initial guess would be that Air France is charging a higher fuel fine than QFF

was the base fare the same? The GST component would be different for different base fares. Then again, there is no reason for Air France to charge GST is the ticket is issued outside Australia.

I was assuming that these were award tickets so would have a base of zero

Ahh yes. The OP did say one was booked through QFF and not just through QF.

I can't work this out myself. I presume that Air France is charging a Fuel Surcharge of approximately 20 Euros/sector (or around $70). Qantas should be charging around $50, so I can't see anything more than a $20 difference.

There are 2 ways I can think of to help clear things up. Try plugging your Itinerary reference into the Lan e-ticket checker here and look at the charges report:
LAN.com Imprima su e-ticket

Note that the 4 fields are
"Search by booking code Passenger last name"
"Search by ticket number Passenger last name" (and the button is for "go")

That should give you a taxes column something like:

YQ 51.26 AUD
QR 7.70 AUD
QR 7.70 AUD
WG 3.00 AUD
UO 17.52 AUD
UO 0.40 AUD
YR 4.00 AUD
(note that this is a BNE-SYD-BNE itinerary, not a BNE-CBR-BNE itinerary!)
which can help with working out where the excess charges come into play.

Or, contact Flying Blue/Qantas and ask them for a taxes/surcharges breakdown for your trip.

From what I have heard here I would not have believed that possible ... until I saw the French were involved ;)

I gave this a try but it says "No Tickets Found" - perhaps their system doesn't talk to Air France? It does show up when I plug the reference number into "Your Bookings" in Qantas, but of course there is no info on taxes, etc.

It does depend. it could be similar to how fuel fines for tickets ex LHR to some places in EMEA are higher if paid in Oz over paid in Europe.

AF may have BNE-CBR categorised as a non europe flight and have a larger fine than QFs domestic fines

When I did an award booking on a BA flight in EMEA, QFF in Australia wanted to charge me about $80 more oneway than QFF UK did

So possibly the lesson here is to go through a Flying Blue office overseas rather than the Sydney office.

The LAN Utility should work. If you are booked on Qantas flights there WILL be an Amadeus PNR for each booking. For the flying Blue booking you may have to contact Qantas with flight/passenger details to get it.

It may help to access via the English portal.

Go here first: LAN - Country Selector & click the following:
  • "Australia/New Zealand"
  • "Travel information"
  • "Printing e-tickets" (Under "Travel preparation")

The page should display in English.

Enter the Amadeus reference under "Search by booking code" and PAX Surname under "Passenger last name", then click SEARCH. Make sure you only click the top SEARCH button, not the lower (only use this if you have entered the ticket number).

Well, it works for the QFF reservation, which appears and shows the taxes as follows:-
YQ 51.26 AUD
QR 10.57 AUD
QR 10.57 AUD
WG 6.00 AUD
UO 7.84 AUD
Total 86.24 AUD

The AF one still doesn't show. It may be a timing thing, as they did say that the award ticket would "confirm" on Friday and that I could cancel it before then.

Well, I received a confirmation email from Flying Blue that lists the taxes. These add up to $89.24, $30 less than the total charge. I phoned Flying Blue to query this and their spin is that its called a "Q" charge and is a fee they pay to book me onto a Qantas flight.

For some reason the booking still doesn't show up in the LAN Utility, however I can view it in the "Amadeus checkmytrip" utility here:
www.checkmytrip.com

Does www.checkmytrip.com show the ticket number for the Flying Blue award flight?

If so, that may work with the LAN Utility (Make sure you click the lower SEARCH button).

Hmmm ... interesting. Using the ticket number the LAN Utility tries to find something and then reports "The passenger last name must match the one on the reservation". Yes, it is spelled correctly, and I copied and pasted the ticket number.
