Did Simpler and Fairer(tm) kill DSCs?

I get one at least once per year (two years ago I got two!), luckily I tend to book things very last minute and have the freedom to move stuff around as I please so each time I get a SC offer I've been able to cream it.

Perhaps if you don't take one up then you don't tend to get them again for a while? Who knows..

Would be great to get a understanding on how QF run these campaigns or what CRM they use.

Clazgirl has gone from Gold - Silver (Jan 15) with 2 flights in her qualifying year ... no offers, nothing
I am going from about 20 flights a year to 7 this qualifying year and hoping that the points calculator is correct to scrap in with a requal of 610 SC...... I have no offers either

Arn't we viable targets for QF ?

How much of your flying is international vs domestic?

Also, how much is economy vs premium?

I have a feeling that they might give more SC offers to international flyers, esp those who fly PE/J/F.

I'm in that category and I haven't had a SC offer in years :D

Nope - we fly a lot internationally and all in F and J and we don't get them......

Current QF period
Clazgirl (just reset) but previous year 1 PE to North America, 1 J to Fiji, 1 Y Port Hedland
Me - 2 Y Port Hedland, 2 Y Newman,

We will both add the following in this years,
Booked, 1 J NY, 1 J LAX - Perth, 1 J NY - Toronto, 1 F LAX- LAS - LAX,
To be booked 1 J Broome, 1 J Fiji or Hawaii

Work proposed more y to PHE, Newman and J to Germany, Melbourne and China

Looking at our travel pattern pretty consistent ratio between international and domestic, just declining by about 300 SC per year over the past three.

I only got DSCs once as P1 and didn't need it back then. I was hoping to get something this time to help me get over the line more comfortably as almost all my international flights in the last 12 months were with *A but didn't get any offers.

I think you are overthinking this topic as no offence, but the answer is simple.

JohnK killed off the DSC's!;)

Apart from JohnK :) I think the reason is fairly simple (and maybe even fairer). After the GFC hit, business travel was drastically reduced. Qantas used things like DSC to allow more status people to be created thus giving people an incentive to direct travel to Qantas. Now that things are normalising we are going back to having to get status the hard way. A parallel with discounting - retail has been discounting like crazy, but are trying to wind back a little as things improve (well things were improving, but we seem to be back to doom and gloom again).

Pre 2008 did double status credit offers exist?

I agree with this.

I've been with QFF for 19 years, a WP for the past 9 and SG prior to that. My first DSC offer dropped into my lap around 2011 and continued until this year. It's a tool to maintain/entice business in tough times - just like JASA/MASA were.

7 flights to scrape in 610 SC ~85SC per flight. Either domestic premium or international Y/Y+. I guess, depending. Edit: or not.

Could really use a DCS offer now haha, I'm 150 SC Short of holding gold expiring in march...

Simple answer is yes they did exist.

Hmm ... There was one promotion not like any other over 10 years ago before the first of the recent batches about 6 years ago.

I remember that one well .. existing bookings qualified ... the only one i was able to take advantage of.

I'll dig up some history later and post it here.

Was in the QF LAX F Lounge a week ago and it was chockers!. The vibe would not be what you would ecpect for a F lounge. Luckily I arrived there at 1730hrs. QF probably thinks there are too many WP and with the financials improving, so prob thinks time to wind back the largesse.

Also have noticed that the Classic award seats to/from LAX in Mid Dec to late Jan 2016 period have been limited to P seats with much less U seats. Meaning you have to burn through more points to get a premium award.

So I. Managed to get 1P and 2U SYD-MEL-LAX mid Dec and 2P LAX-SYD, and 1P LAX-MEL-SYD in late Jan 2016 (Syd-Mel, Mel-Syd legs in U).

As a semi SC run you can get a SYD-MEL-LAX in J for same price as SYD-LAX but for 40 SC more (80SC if a return ticket). These connection tickets are released 353 +2 days ahead. Current horizons sale will suit those coming back from US by 20-21 January 2016

$6208 for 440 SC Horizons Sale in J (Business Sale discount J). Ending 3 Feb

The first DSC I am aware of was made way back when Tesna were expected to start Anett up again, and Qantas made a DSC offer to people that had suddenly started flying Qantas when Ansett went under. The offers have certainly been around, but the way they target people has certainly changed over the years.

I think the apparent improvement in the financial situation is also lessening QF's need/desire to stimulate demand by offering these kinds of things. I'm not so sure if it's about "thinning" the ranks of elites as much as that, though probably a welcome side effect (remembering for every WP that is minted QF will pay money to partners for lounge access and the like, and I am guessing this also includes EK @ DXB would not come cheap I imagine).. but the main reason for these various promotions would be to stimulate demand. Now with a bit of a capacity shrink and the end of the domestic war with VA and growth limited, and the financials improving, there is prob less of a need for this kind of thing, but the 50% extra ones seem common now (though I've never had one, but that's fine).

I think many of us (me included tbh) have been spoiled over the years to almost expect these thngs on a semi-regular basis... and well no go you do kind of feel a bit cheated in a way but I always say to myself these things were (are) inducements and not something to be expected or relied upon. Absolutely wonderful to get, but I'd never expect it.

October 2004 for travel to January 2005. Requalified Qantas Silver 2nd time.

From memory there was another in 2002?

So it seems that Qantas has always used DSC as a tool, but sparsely in better times and more generously in bad times, which parallels what we are seeing now and have over the last few years.
