I'm considering using 144,000 Qantas FF points for a BA flight; London-LA return, business class.

The ticket cost is around £7,000.

So 20 points = £1 in this case.
Is this good value?
What is good value when redeeming points?

If you think it is good value , then it is good value. Much more important than what other people think

I wouldn't say that the ticket is necessarily worth GBP7000 to be fair. A full fare business ticket is around that price , but there are a lot of discounted fares around that are a lot cheaper than that. e.g. in Jan , both BA and AA have a business fare of GBP1297 plus taxes and a 1st class fare of GBP2295 plus taxes though do require things like 7 night or saturday night stays

If you are having to do a midweek return, then it could be a great time to use points imo

If you are happy with the cost, then go for it.

Dave is right-it really does depend on what you want to do and your values. Many report here that the best use of QFF points is upgrading, however that is obviously of little relevance when considering Europe-USA.
We are all different. When I use AA miles upgrading is of little relevance as I can do it for no cost anyway. However when comparing value i do so against the best fare I can get ie BNE-USA I can get in J on OW for~$A7500 so my 150000 miles are 20=$1.However if I calculated it against the full QF J fare it would be 10=$1.
So if it is really what you want to do-go for it.

+1 to the above comments - if you reckon it's good value then it's good value.

Personally I reckon an award ticket (even accounting for varying award redemption levels between FFPs) at the v least is always going to save you heaps anyway on long haul premium routes, unless you get some insanely cheap deal on the paid ticket like the BOGOF QF is running or something.

Would you really consider paying £7,000 for the trip instead? If so, then you could well be getting £7,000 of value from the points. But if you would not actually spend the money, then the actual value you are deriving is unlikely to be £7,000, even though you may be getting a nicer travel experience than if you had paid cash for an economy class ticket.

Value is yours to behold.

I dont know how you're arriving at that figure, I just held a seat into Galileo and got a fare quote of A$5026 plus A$1090.50 taxes, so around 2600 pound.

I'm grateful for all the replies. All your notes on value being mine to determine are right.

You're also all right that that fare is usually much lower, but for the dates I need (next week) it's now down a little at £6,068.90. Not a price I'd consider.

Certainly, you've helped me realise an inflated price doesn't necessarily improve the value.

I'll continue to consider.
Many thanks.
