Hi everyone and wow thank you all for the suggestions!

I didn't really have a budget or time of year in mind. I just wanted some ideas so that I can begin planning something - that's why I didn't want to limit myself with anything. I also didn't mention what I like to do so that I, again, don't limit myself to doing the same thing or possibly missing out on a great suggestions.

Tahiti is a standout for me because I've been looking into it but have never been/don't know anyone who has been.

I appreciate all the suggestions and welcome any further suggestions :)

I've been to Tahiti, but it was 17 years ago for my honeymoon. I have to say I did not enjoy Papeete. I found it dirty and the people weren't particularly friendly. The black sand beach would have been nice (because it's different to normal white/yellow sand), but there was so much rubbish on it, that I departed the area quickly.

If I were to go back, I would avoid the Capital and head over to Moorea. Short ferry across or you can fly. We stayed at a cheap basic resort on the beach, we could walk into the local village about 20mins away if we wanted any supplies. We hired a little 2 seat min-car one day and circumnavigated the island. Bought some baguette, jambon and fromage (bread, ham and cheese) from some local shops along the way and a bottle of wine. Was a great day. The pineapple was amazing.

After Moorea, we flew to Bora Bora. We stayed at an overwater bungalow there on one of the outer rim islands. This was a great experience. The diving was awesome. We didn't go to the main island of Bora Bora, so can't comment here. I did have family go there on a cruise once and they didn't like it. I think its all about expectations.

Bora Bora (where we stayed) was expensive, I would recommend going straight to Moorea and enjoy the island life. Just remember its a French speaking country. Have a great time.

I've just landed back from Sri Lanka - WOW what a cool place to visit! I liked Colombo, but the smog was bad! But went down south to Bentoto and stayed at Shinagawa Beach Hotel - now that was really awesome! I had the wife & young kids, and we all loved it. Even went down south to Galle and hopped on a Cataman out near Marissa. I recommend it, tho I was there for 10 days. I have tips if you are travelling with people though....
Also, I recommend the Cook Islands as I dream of going back there. It is very similar to Sri Lanka I found, but more laid back.
I'm an explorer, but loves living a bit fancier than in hostels, but that's me, and enjoy all the rough spots to dine as well as the good restaraunts.
