I have very little information on this, but I just caught the tail end of a news report on ABC Melbourne radio that seemed to be saying that a plane on approach into MEL had a depressurisation and emergency descent.

Has anyone heard any more information?

Shock horror, the plan dropped 26000 ft, see what happens when you start talking about oxy mask deployments on AFF :(:

Qantas passenger jet drops 26,000 feet

Qantas passengers have told of their fear as a plane flying from Adelaide to Melbourne plunged 26,000ft.

The Boeing 737 was cruising at 36,000ft when the cabin suddenly depressurised, Qantas told Nine News reporter Chloe Bugelly.
The plane was forced to drop to 10,000ft, Qantas said.

Why is No News using a photo of a QF747? Are they stupid?

A MELBOURNE-bound Qantas flight reportedly plunged 20,000 feet during a mid-air drama this morning. Worried passengers were reportedly told to put on oxygen masks during the incident aboard this morning's flight.
A passenger, who declined to be named, said the scare occurred shortly after flight QF670 left Adelaide about 6.10am.
He said the captain announced the precaution was being taken because the plane's air conditioning system had failed.

CX had a pressurization problem the other day,I wonder if it made headlines.
Incident: Cathay B744 at San Francisco on Jan 23rd 2011, could not pressurize cabin
By Simon Hradecky, created Monday, Jan 24th 2011 07:49Z, last updated Monday, Jan 24th 2011 07:49ZA Cathay Pacific Boeing 747-400, registration B-HOV performing flight CX-873 from San Francisco,CA to Hong Kong (China), was climbing through 10000 feet when the crew requested to level off at 10000 reporting they could not pressurize the cabin and needed to work that out. The crew subsequently decided to return to San Francisco for a safe landing on runway 28R about 110 minutes after departure.

The airplane was repaired, departed again after about 3 hours on the ground and reached Hong Kong with a total delay of 7.5 hours following another intermediate stop at Osaka Kansai (Japan) for a crew change.

A passenger reported that following the decision to return to San Francisco because of the cabin pressure problem the airplane dumped fuel at 9000 feet before returning to San Francisco. Following repairs they departed again but needed to make another stop at Kansai Airport to change the crew.

Cheers

There is a bit of difference between levelling off at 10000ft as your pressure system isn't working, versus doing a rapid descent from 36000ft to 10000ft.

While we can pick on the finer detail of the media's publishing process (and getting it out fast seems to outweigh getting it right), I am sure it was an event that gave more than a few people on board a bit of a scare.

Fair points there oz_mark and I understand what you are saying,I was just wondering whether if the Cathay event had happened to QF whether it would still have been reported the same way.
I just don't see the need for using words like "plunges" when it's clear that it was a controlled descent,I certainly did not intend to make light of what was probably quite a scary event for the passengers .
Cheers :)

I agree that plunge makes it sound uncontrolled, but then we know what to expect from the media in this country. Either way, it's not an event that I am in a hurry to particpate in!

I also note that some of the articles are now using the word 'drop' rather than 'plunge'.

Actually what is entertaining is reading some of the comments from readers. It seems most are sick of the QF bashing!
