Denied seat recline on long haul

This thread is making me scared to even think about reclining.

I personally would recline when attempting to sleep but upright at other times and would not ask the person behind for permission but a friend who recently flew long haul Y for the first time said he didn't recline at all as he though it was inconsiderate to the person behind.

The point is everyone will have different thoughts about this, we just have to agree to disagree. Some strong opinions an valid arguements for all issues raised here though. Has been very interesting reading!

It's amazing this thread is still going. Before you post, think about all the lost hours of productivity robbed from the Australian economy :)

I suspect a lot of people are in Airline Lounges, posting here to pass the time. However, I agree. That time could be used to find a cure for something!

I have decided (if I ever fly Y again) to ask the person sitting behind me if they are an AFFer. Then depending on their answer, make my decision to recline or not.

Perhaps when you first book your ticket there should be a simple question in the booking process "Do you wish to recline in flight" and allocate seating based on the response. All recliners to the rear, all non recliners to the front. There shouldn't be any complaints that way;)

Except that I like to recline AND sit at the front of the plane

Yes good point, but that's AFF! My main beef is with someone who reclined during taxi-ing, whilst they were talking on their mobile phone, which happened to be immediately after any time access to lounges was removed from WP's, and QF's loyalty bonus was changed, and I was travelling on a jetstar flight that was delayed 79 hrs and I'll never fly with them again, of course during the time I spent in the lounge waiting for my delayed flight, I observed someone picking their nose, wearing thongs, whilst talking loudly on their mobile phone who skipped the queue to the bar. Not too mention my AMEX earning had just been cut and I think Alan Joyce should be sacked ! :)

...................I observed someone picking their nose!

I flew back from SYD in J recently and had to observe the 'gentleman' across the aisle, picking and examining the contents of his nose throughout most of the flight. Status doesn't buy class

Rather than watch, why didn't you just recline your seat and go to sleep?

I wouldn't dare. Haven't you read what happens to recliners on Short Flights? I'd end up with whiplash!

Actually I'll also be in J or maybe F and will come back to see how you are sleeping !

Anyone who follows this website seriously should be able to travel J on ASA's and not sit in Y behind a reclining J or otherwise.

Syd - Ayq runs to F now? Who'd a thunk it? I shudder to think what F might be like on a 737, but I look forward to your entertaining trip report from the voyage:D

F on a 737 would be sitting up front with a cap on I think !! but then again my son is on the 747's and it is not as comfortable up there as you might think.

Love the AFF website as it's nice to interact with people with a sense of humour !!

yes - even if you are asleep it is usual on many airlines the crew will ask you to put your seat forward (you can continue to sleep of course). I've even seen crew on one airline manually press the button and raise the (still sleeping) passenger upright! (The passenger woke sometime later and reclined again, but by that time service was over).

Generally if it is a late night flight and everyone wants to sleep the meal service is also quicker (and tailored with fewer courses or might even just be a snack or sandwich). if that's the case and I plan on skipping the meal I just go to sleep upright and when I wake up recline then.
On a recent flight (SIN-SYD), the fellow in front of me reclined as soon as the wheels left the ground - come dinner I asked the FA to get him to put his seat forward - she said she "was't allowed to" and that it was "against the rules" to wake a passenger at any time to move their seat forward, even during service. This surprised me - it made my dinner very awkward. Was she lying?

which airline? If it was SQ I could believe it.

Sounds like SQ to me too. There was a guy who smelt strongly of tobacco each time he visited a loo. He even had a cigarette lighter in his hand. The staff refused to speak with him even though many passengers had pointed the issue out to them. Qantas on the other hand seem to delight in enforcing the rules.
