There are quite cheap flights on Delta to various South American cities for next year, via the US. The outbound international flight must be between February 4 and March 27 or May 1 to June 19.

The rules listed on ITA Matrix say it's valid for DL flights and DL codeshares on VA. SYD-LAX-JFK-BOG-ATL-LAX-SYD is currently $1154 for a random date I picked. I can see ones for MEL to LIM, SYD to GRU for $1236 and more combinations. They show up on delta.com if you search there.

EDIT: You can do open jaws but not double open-jaws, SYD-LAX-JFK-BOG LIM-ATL-LAX-SYD for $AUD1048.54 :)

Wow - that's a fantastic price for Sth America! It's almost SC run territory. Whats the fare code?

The ones I saw were X, T or a mix of the two. I've never flown Delta or any SkyTeam carriers before so aren't sure what status/miles earning is like, but the open-jaw I added in the edit works out to 3.1c(AUD) per mile flown.

Unfortunately I can't go over there around those times.

That's awesome. Annoying that I don't have the time available to be able to go.

Hmmm, pity they aren't with a *A carrier that could earn some decent miles in A3, if you ever happen to come across some of those it would be good doctau... :)

But still... These are half decent, problem is that by the time you add on Perth you will no doubt be getting up around the $1600+ area and its not that much more to do it in J on a USDM award...

Even if it's *A, Y fare would not yield many tier points.

Not that much more?

Wouldn't it be closer to AUD3,000 including taxes and surcharges?

If you had miles that you shared and got at about 1 cent so about US$1165 or so for 100k, I think I worked out that with the miles plus about $250-300 you pay in taxes and booking fees a J class trip to the US was about A$1700-1800 and that is 110,000 miles, South America is about 120,000 miles in J isn't it??? Anyway no I think it would be closer to about $2000 rather than $3000....

OK. I must be thinking of a different US Airways.

I noticed someone said AUD2,000+ for 100,000 miles during latest promotion. When I bought 100,000 miles a few years ago at parity it was ~AUD1,800.

That made a trip to Thailand in business~AUD1,700 and you are now saying that same trip is now cheaper at ~AUD1,000-AUD1,200 in business?

There are USDM buy promos and there were share promos, the share promos at little more than a cent per mile were the cheapest and about as cheap as you could buy any miles out there.... The latest share promo i think went from about 1 cent per mile up to 1.5 cents i think so the good old days are probably gone, but if you shared a bunch before this and still have them left over they are pretty good value compared to Y flights...

I just noticed the fare rules allow a single free stopover in LAX ($135 for others). You could also view this as a very indirect $1054 flight to Los Angeles with a free stopover in Bogota :)
