US airlines approve merger deal

The boards of the US airlines Delta and Northwest have approved a merger deal between the two companies.
The merger will create the world's largest airline by traffic.
Both airlines emerged from bankruptcy protection late last year.
The new entity will retain the name Delta.

I read a story recently that DL was in talks with Boeing about the feasibility of flying 777-200LR services non-stop from JFK to SYD and return. At first I thought "Oh, not that old chestnut again!", but it would be a big winner for many people... Me included. If DL was to put in a competitive premium cabin, the convenience of a non-stop service would wean me off UA.

While driving throught the wilds of New Jersey last night on my way back to Philly Airport I was listening to a discussion on NPR about the potential United-Continental merger, and the suggestion was that this was more likely now that Delta had become more dominant within Skyteam. Obviously Continental would have to transition to Star Alliance, and may disappear just as NWA is about to.

It really would suit me given that I fly Star Alliance most of the time, but find the Continental serves some of my regualar destinations more effectively, such as Newark and Houston.

I wonder if this will have any impact on V Australia's talk of an agreement with NorthWest to carry its passengers around the US?
Might be a bit harder to set it up while the merger is going on.
