Delayed flight compensation?

Was recently on a VA flight from MEL to ADL
Connecting with a ZL flight from ADL to PLO.
The VA flight was delayed in MEL due to mechanical issues - master caution light - fuel flow/pressure issue
Ended up being delayed and sitting on the tarmac for about 3 hours and of course missed our connecting flight.
We had to rebook the connecting flight to a much later flight which resulted in additional charges.

It seems like there is no provision for any kind of compensation or reimbursement for these charges from VA? (Or any airline in AU for that matter)

Or am I missing something?

Thank you

Was it on the one booking? If not, in which case how would VA be aware of the connecting flight? Being unaware, they could argue that if they knew of the connnection they may have handled your booking differently. Unlikely they would have in reality, but the argument is they did not have a chance to do so.

VA do not service PLO so no it was not on the same booking
ADL to PLO was with ZL
Looks like trying to make a claim with credit card travel insurance might be the only option

VA and ZL have an interline agreement. If bookings were linked somehow and minimum connections time met, is there no protection for flight delays? Happy to continue to pay the QF premium if this is the case.

Interesting, I'm not sure how the bookings could be linked - other than via a codeshare which i dont think is possible?
Do you happen to know what the minimum connection time would be?
Thank you

Have a look here Can’t see anything on how to link or what happens in delays though.

Thanks for that!
Yep minimums were met. Had a 1hr35minute layover in ADL
VA217 connecting to ZL4366
I made a claim with VA to cover the change fee as we had to rebook our ZL flights to ZL4388
After VA217 was over 2 hours late arriving into ADL
They basically came back and said too bad so sad :(

Not sure that rex website actually indicates an interline agreement with Virgin or just we advise you have at least one hour connection. There maybe one and if there is then when you check any bags at MEL, they would have tagged them for PLO. IF you booked the flights separately yourself (ie not through an agent) then I guess any chance of a link between them for interlining is not there.

Sadly, you are generally on your own with separate bookings.

No, you are not missing anything. Oz airlines don't want to open a "compensation" can of worms and will spend millions to stop that happening.

If you had the flights on the one booking, it would have been up to VA to get you to PLO as they caused the delay - even then there would be no compensation.
