It was snowing in Helsinki and no baggage made it onto the Finnair flight to Rovaneimi. Staff at RVN said it could be 24 hrs or so before the bags arrived. We went shopping for some extra thermal undies etc. Our hotel called at around 10:30 next morning to say the bags had arrived. We decided to take the advice of a Finnish friend and lodge a claim with Finnair. We did so on Finnair's website after we got home a couple of weeks later. A couple of messages back and forth with Finnair and $400 appeared in our bank account this week.

Good result and only a short delay in getting the back to you.

Was the $400 the actual cost of your undies? Or was there a compensation/goodwill element in the payout?

Just adding on here rather than starting a new thread. So flew Virgin Melbourne-Queenstown and bags didn’t show up. There was about 12 of us affected.

The virgin lady at baggage services said we could be compensated $50/day. But I’ve found no references to that amount on the Virgin website. What I have found through googling is the Montreal Convention, but I’m not sure if that applies to me with delayed baggage.

Now $50 may sound like a lot but when you need to buy moisturiser, sunscreen, shower gel, toothbrush, toothpaste, hair brush, face wash, eye makeup remover, a very small amount of makeup to get by for meetings, change of underwear, it disappears straight away.

Can I claim more than $50/day? I didn’t go crazy with my spend, but the necessities added up to about $150.

Just want to know my rights.

Thanks!
