Declining levels of IFE

A good example of the reflection issue in that 'selfie' above!

As for watching wifi content on a phone it's a bit coughpy being so small - Galaxy phones and Iphones are too small really for this purpose and the battery runs down very quickly using the screen brightness you need to view. Will we get power outlets one day? Laptops or tablets would be better but it does beg the question of why we poor old passengers have to provide it in the first place. Next we'll be bringing our own seats!

finally someone on here that sees thru the con of VAs IFE 'solution'!! noting VA marketing focuses on the 'content' being 'free'!! BYO device is NOT FREE.. so we all need to BUY/pre charge/ and travel with our personal laptops/tablets/ipads etc equivalent in screen size to other carriers inseat AVOD...and a big F U to those VA i/smart fone only users!!!..at least QF PROVIDES FREE IPADS WITH SIMILAR SIZE SCREENS TO FIXED SEAT AVOD TO EVERY PAX

then STOP YELLING HERE and go fly QF.
I don't think U/T/R needs much encouragement as I believe they actually get paid to do so ...

As for the wireless VA IFE, I used it on the weekend with my 10½" netbook and it worked fine. (Using IE8 with Silverlight)

Was able to run multiple windows/tabs having the Map and other programs running simultaneously.

Personally I prefer to use my own iPad, it bugs me imagining how many germ-laden and sticky hands have touched everything in my seat before me as it is. At least I know my iPad is only made gross by myself.

Virgin give out Samsung Galaxies on most domestic flights I go on. I've never been given an iPad on a QF 737, but most times on a QF 767. Virgin usually have a power point, QF only seem to have power points on their newer aircraft.

Byo device is not free, but at least I know there is stuff that I want to watch on it

With all respect your point is pretty lame; "BYO device is NOT FREE", I wonder how many people buy a device as they already don't have some type of device that will not work the streaming IFE. If you have used the streaming IFE with a BYO device you will find it's excellent, it has more content than the Samsung units provided in J and works fast and trouble free, my opinion is that it's also superior than any seat back installed unit. Once CASA relax some restrictions, restrictions around when you can use, will also stop some further annoyances. If you have a device that can operate streaming IFE it's certainly free.

I notice the constant CAPITALISATION and stirring in many threads ... but paid? Any elaboration available :) ?

I prefer BYOD IFE if it removes the screens from the seat back in Y
- if you're in Y it can be comfortable to sleep leaning against the seat in front, but not so when there is a hot IFE screen.
- if it moves the seat back in front of you further from your face, I've found QANTAS Y feels more cramped since the thicker seatback in your face is an inch or two closer than on VA/NZ.

It's just a cost cutting measure and one of many reason I don't fly VA anymore!

Pretty sure even the BSI 737-800's do NOT have a working power point

Not even a WORKING power point!! Arghh, disaster. Primarily a domestic and trans-Tasman jet. I think we will cope without power points, and for that matter a seat back IFE. I prefer my iPad, loaded with my content.

I think we will cope without power points,

Very much determined by individual requirements. If I fly with a fully charged iPhone battery, I can last all day without a charge, meaning I don't need to carry a charger for 1 day jaunts (which I regularly do without even carry-on). If I use the IFE on my iPhone (best described as a PITA anyway), than I'm at 50-60% charge before I start work. When I land, I want to go to work, not buggerise around trying to charge my phone.

LOL Not sure if SRS
Sadly I am - by comfortable I mean 'slightly better than sitting bolt upright or at the infinitesimal recline of a Y seat'.
Give me a power plug of some sort (preferably AC or USB at 2.1A) and I'd be MUCH happier than having some bulky screen intruding on my space.

Just a couple of points to make.

Regarding our marketing citing the content as being 'free', you will remember that our previous IFE, 'Live2Air', incurred a small charge. So it would be remiss to not point out the distinct difference in this new offering.

You are quite correct that our new IFE is for those with a smartphone, which it should be noted that Australia is 6th in the world for smartphone penetration (statistics cite between 64% and 73% total).
We also cater to those using laptops with the silverlight plugin.

The whole point on the 'BYO device' model, is that it future proofs the entertainment offering inside the cabin in regard to IFE technological advancements.
Many have made comment on the older AVOD IFE screens that are in our older A330s, which highlight how technology has moved. So with that in mind, does the new Apple iPad Airs that have just been announced this morning by Apple CEO Tim Cook, now mean that those airlines offering older generation iPads are 'old hat'?
Of course this is said tongue-in-cheek, but it does illustrate the speed that handheld technology is moving.

End of the day it's a cost cutting measure and nothing else! Saves $ on installation, maintenance and fuel!

The lack of IFE (even overhead screens and audio) is one of the main reasons I no longer fly Virgin.

As for the ex EK A330's they are 13 years old and should have had a proper refit, especially IF they are staying around for much longer, so using the defence of how technology changes is interesting.

Virgin Australia should have really followed the path of Virgin America's A320s IMO

Awful and Broken are about to get a refit.
