I am looking for some assistance/suggestions re the following itinerary.

My parents are flying over to the US to do a cruise from Vancouver to Anchorage.

I was thinking that a DCIC22 and Plat challenge would be perfect for them. Then, to top things off, and given that the travel o/s once a year, I thought that it would be cheaper to ticket ex-NRT (even though this would delay Plat qualification).

Firstly, I know that many people have previously posted on purchasing Oneworld products ex-NRT, but could not find the post I was looking for (I think it was one of QF009's) - could someone please reply with a link for a good post for ex-NRT bookings through AA.

Secondly, the initerary.

My parents want to stop in LAX for a while, so I intially tried the following itinerary:

NRT - LAX - YVR - [ship to ANC] - SFO - MEL - NRT

However, on my calculations, the land (or in this case, sea) segment would need to also be included, meaning that for fare rules purposes, the intinerary would look like this:

NRT - LAX - YVR - ANC - SFO - MEL - NRT - unfortunately, 22,800 miles.

So, I decided to change it to:

NRT - LAX - YVR - SFO - MEL - NRT

It only has 4 stops, but 3 are North America (they'll be stopping in each of LAX, YVR and SFO) - I assume that this will require an additional payment ?

They can then purchase a one way ticket from ANC - SFO, which is only aroun $US700, still making the trip DCIR22 worthwhile, even though it becomes a bit more marginal once you take into account MEL - NRT at the start (although they'll do that on points). However, I think that Plat Challenge makes it worthwhile overall.

Plat challenge

In notice that Q points accrue @ 1.5 per mile for Y and B. What about D ? I assume it's still 1.5 - is this correct ? This is relevant, as it would enable them to hit 10,000 Q points before the SFO - MEL leg.

Questions:

1. do people disagree with anything above ?

2. is there a way of fitting ANC into this itinerary, that I have missed ?

3. any other suggestions/comments ?

Appreciate the help.

cheers

YVR-ANC is operated by AS and hence not eligible for OneWorld Circle Pacific fare. The only AA-operated flights to ANC (which are seasonal) are from DFW and ORD (hmm, I suspect ORD may not be happening this year, better check).

Yes, D fares earn 1.5 EQP/mile.

so how will that work with mile calculations if they will be sea transit between YVR and ANC ? The ANC - SFO leg is defnitely on AA metal.

Does that mean that a trip with an open jaw from YVR to ANC will be invalid, even though they don't need to actually fly between the destinations ?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

All the flights that I can find between ANC and SFO are AA codeshares on AS; what date ru planning?

sorry, my mistake - memo to myself - avoid using the word "defnitely" !

Does this mean that it can't be used as part of the DCIRC22, even though it has a AA flight number ?

Correct; can only use OneWorld flights
