Hi all
I am just waiting confirmation of my next UK trip (asia is pretty much locked in). I am toying with the idea of making this a massive one :D. There are more plans to come - as one I have an idea of confirmation I will start planning in earnest.
Whilst I am musing I was wondering what the best (i.e. maximum possible mileage on AA) could be in a day around Oz.
I think the best possible routings would be either:

SYD-MEL-ADL-PER-SYD - 4,190 miles

SYD-MEL 06:00-07:30
MEL-ADL 08:00-09:00
ADL-PER 11:20-13:10
PER-SYD 16:25-22:30

SYD-PER-ADL-MEL-SYD - 4,190

SYD-PER 06:10-09:10
PER-ADL 10:40-15:00
ADL-MEL 17:20-19:10
MEL-SYD 20:00-21:00

SYD-BNE-ADL-PER-SYD - 4,828 miles

SYD-BNE 06:05-07:35
BNE-ADL 08:30-10:40
ADL-PER 11:20-13:10
PER-SYD 16:25-22:30

Obviously the SYD-MEL-ADL-PER-SYD is the lowest risk with biggest gaps between flights but there be more option for cancelled flights - any thoughts on enhancing the mileages? The limitation is that it has to be a day trip. There will be hand baggage only (laptop to keep me amused and maybe a book)

Actually the max would depend on which day of the week you were planning to do the run.

I think a SYD-CBR-BNE-MEL-ADL-PER-SYD or SYD-BNE-CBR(-SYD?)-MEL-ADL-PER-SYD should be possible in a very long day (and overnighter), but may not work on a couple of days. Will work on it. Have some time spare at the moment!

Does day trip include overnight? Do you have to start and end at SYD? Most likely you will be able to do more if starting and ending somewhere else, due to SYD's curfew.

Are you looking for most flown miles or most earned miles? Routings likely to differ thanks to minimum mileages. What about costs? Some routings that earn decent mileage may be pricey compared to other routings that earn a bit less.

I once played with award tool to come up with over a dozen domestic Australia flight segments in a day on legal routings. Not possible to create the same on multi-city booking tool, at least not on a single booking.

What about trans-tasman? I was playing with an itinerary AKL-HBA return in a day. AKL-MEL-SYD-HBA-MEL-AKL with a few hours in SYD to do a side trip (schedules permitting). There are plenty of other 5 segments in a day itineraries that include trans-tasman.

Here's a O'night option, departing at 15:25 and arriving back at 09:45 the next morning:

Code:
Sydney to Adelaide QF761 SYD-ADL 15:25-17:05
Adelaide to Perth QF599 ADL-PER 19:50-21:40
Perth to Cairns QF1030 PER-CNS 23:30-04:50+1
Cairns to Sydney QF921 CNS-SYD 05:45-09:45
5,397 miles, 300SC's or 8095 Qpoints. (and Sleep the rest of the day  )

Maybe: -AKL-ADL-PER-CNS-SYD FOR 6697 MILES (10,046 Qpoints or 360 SC's in D)

Thanks to the schedules that routing requires at least 2 overnights - at least it did when I looked it up while planning an xONEx (purchased outside Australia and NZ - that routing not allowed for local purchase).

Yes - max earning on a DONE4. It cant be tacked onto the end of the DONE4 in terms of delaying the landing as I am thinking of doing something like ...jfk-dfw-anc-dfw-jfk-lax-hkg-bom-syd which will add at least two days to the return journey anway so an extra day will be unpalatable.

The idea is to leave home at about 4AM (subject to trains being available - or using the car to drive myself) and spend the whole day maximising points. I know that does restrict it a fair bit. It will also have ot be a week day if I do it to save time with mrssimongr at a weekend.

The underlying objective is very much to maximise miles earned.

That's not going to help as a DONE4 tag-on when SYD is the first "stopover". Can't depart Australia twice.
Nah, I meant something like -LAX/HKG/SCL-AKL- ...

Yes, but I think he would be wanting to return to SYD at end of the overseas part, and then some time later do a day-trip around Australia to use the 4 x SWP sectors. Your suggestion works if he wants to take the long way home in the first place.

Now Simon had clarified requirements I understand.

He could still do the AKL thing if he stops at ADL and nests a return to SYD in the middle.

Hi all

As a newbie can I ask a dumb question:?: What is a DONE4 etc - is there a link somewhere on the site where I can get some information?

Yes you can start by looking here Qantas round the World fares.

Or search this site for LONE4, DONE4 or AONE4 where is L is econony, D is business class and A is first class. Here are some search examples on AFF for DONE4s
