Dash Cams, the pros and cons

That's exactly what we thought too but think the opposite applies.

This is hit number four, so I'm definitely seeing that its a problem. Might go something like blue next time.
The first one that rear ended me was a cab; waiting to turn right and he came around a bend and straight into me.
Second one was a p plater that decided to reverse park but didnt bother to check behind him. Apparently the honking horn wasnt much of a clue either.
Third one was a hit and run; drove straight into the front of my parked car and drove off.

Very very annoying for you BC. I am cough about not getting any scratch in my car - and park well away from everyone else.

Have also noticed that come Dec 1 people put their brains on holiday when driving.
Have a maroon car. Another scratch/dent the other day from the fuel cap to the rear bumper bar. The fuel cap is damaged slightly. Dad says he left huge space to the car next to him in car park but that moron has still managed to cause damage.

How do people get their drivers licences? I'd really love to know.

Not sure a rear dash cam would capture the number plate of the moron parked parallel to you and reversing out? Not sure how a dash cam works but if it was somehow able to capture that information I'd buy a dash cam and report these people to my insurance company.

Christmas must bring out the short tempers and lack of attention because I swear my daily commute is boring and fast (4.5klms) but yesterday there were three incidences that could have ended up in a collision if I didnt avoid them.

1. Driver in left hand lane who I was driving parrallel with/overtaking decided to change into my lane and I had to move to the centre dividing grass to avoid her.
2. Turning right at a round about, the guy in the left hand lane decided to U-turn at the round about, cutting off my exit (I checked the footage, he had a straight head only lane, I had turn right and straight ahead lane).
3. Driving down my street and a car comes out of a side street to illegally turn right and Im forced to slam on brakes to avoid him.

Crazy. And my car is bright emergency yellow - no one can claim they cant/didnt see it.

I've often said come December 1, people's brains turn to mush when driving.

Denali - my and blackcat's experience with red cars seems to make them a target for stupid.

They're like that all year round.

The worst one that has crept in here is someone turning in front of you from a side street. People used to give way. Now they just turn in front of you expecting you to slow down or stop.

Its definitely getting worse as we get closer to xmas. Had one the other day where I moved into the slip lane to turn left, and a Merc decided to also turn left from the normal lane and narrowly avoided t-boning me only because I slammed on the brakes.

Traffic this morning a mess; truck overturned on freeway onramp, dropping 42 tonne of rubbish. So took a different road; had a good run but sounds like not after I went through, there was a three car pile up. Everyone else also avoiding the freeway made it chaos.

I can see Dash Cam's being a necessity, just like airbags were 20 years ago. The reason being, unfortunately for insurance and litigation reasons where they will be a requirement for comprehensive insurance. That's my prediction in the next 5 years or so.

Has anyone bought a dash cam since the previous post ?

Are there any other recommendations ?

Apart from the ones you can find on dashcam websites here is one quietly in the corner:

F770 | THINKWARE

I have heard several installers say Blackvue has fallen out of favour recently due to functional problems resulting in return to manufacturer/distributor with 3 month turnarounds. For some unknown reason (other than the say so of vendors) it appears that Sandisk SD cards should not be used in dashcams

Most important functions that i think are essential:
1080p recording front and rear, 30fps, size of CMOS video sensor
nighttime video quality
wide angle
movement/impact triggers
supercapacitor for backup power and not Li-ion battery
heat resistance
size of SD card
built in wifi with smartphone app
accuracy of GPS - app should tie GPS data into a map

I have looked at several dashcams from basic models and upwards. The Thinkware F770 is very good but I couldn't find a salesperson who knew anything about them.

I finally purchased the Navman MiVUE850. It has 1440p front and 1080p rear recording, wifi with app, day/night optimisation and other features.

Now I need to find an IKEA person to put it all together

Don't get an IKEA person to install anything. They only use a Phillips #2 screwdriver, and are prone to fits of rage which may not be a good idea when they have your car
