Just o/s on a trip with our chief procurement guy, who has recently re-negotiated our company's regional air deals (Asia).

Just thought some would find this interesting, for the first time ever, several carriers have been blacklisted from carrying our staff PERIOD. I.E. Even if you are stuck in an airport and a 'blacklisted' airline is the only flight out that night, we will no longer be allowed to travel on them.

There was a list of about 20 airlines for the routes our staff fly in Asia that have been black listed. Won't list them all but suffice to say the Indonesians feature heavily - and Garuda is banned.

Our procurement guy said that Garuda is actually barred from flying to several countries because of its safety problems and that the Australian reg body is actually reviewing their rights to fly to Oz - can anyone confirm that is happening?!

The E.U blacklists airlines and refuses them access to their airspace. They are set to ban all Indonesian airlines from late next week: EU bans 'unsafe' Indonesian airlines | NEWS.com.au

I believe the master list of banned airlines is kept here:
Transport - Air Transport

Australia has no plans to ban Garuda at this stage, but is discussing the situation with the EU and Indonesia. More details: Garuda 'too unsafe for Europe' | NEWS.com.au

I think it is smart to have a blacklist of airlines that you are banned from flying. I certainly have blacklisted some airlines and wouldn't fly them. I would be miffed if my work told me that I had to fly them...

Thanks Mal for the info, I knew Garuda was really bad - I wouldn't set foot on them anyway - but I didn't actually know that they have been banned from 50 countries!

I support them being reviewed by Australia, will be interesting to see what CASA comes up with (reading the news.com.au article)
