Must be Groundfeeders curse, but I'm on QF 784 BNE-CNS Monday arvo.

Given the size of the Larry the Beast and its speed, I'm vainly hoping that it should be in Darwin or Denpasar by late pm tomorrow - but sometimes optimism just lets you down. I've checked out its credentials on BOM site and it paints a pretty nasty picture so far, BUT I DON"T WANT TO BE PART OF IT!!

Anyone else on this flight to hold hands (more specifically the chuck bucket)? I may even have to take an extreme measure of tempering my usual desires at the QP refreshment centre and stop at 22.

The flight, if operating, is bound to be delayed and worse still we might get dumped at Townsville to enjoy a 5 hour omnibus ride!

Oy! I'm in Darwin, you can keep it in Queensland thank you very much!

If I were you I'd expect your flight to be cancelled. I think they'll resume TVL services but Cairns looks like it's going to get the brunt of it. Even after its past there will be rescue and essential services needed, they won't be bringing healthy passengers up.

I hope it doesn't come to that, but it's not looking good. At least Cairns is built better than Darwin was back with Tracey.

Fellow travellers, I am in Cairns, and all flights in and out of Cairns have been cancelled at least until tomorrow (Monday) arvo.

Just got back from dinner at Trinity Beach beach front (Atlantis, Vasey Esplanade, dinner courtesy of Troy, former chef to Richard Branson on Necker Island BVI)...there is a totally wierd calm just now - not a hint or breathe of wind.

Not sure what tomorrow will bring...one thing is for certain - no plane rides for myself and mrs platy for a day or two!!!

Any chance you can re-schedule trip?

Flights to Cairns and Townsville airports have been suspended and Larry is not due to hit the coast south of Cairns, between Innisfail and Cardwell, until about 7:30am Monday. Good luck, hope all goes well.

QF 784 is showing as "estimated" at the moment and I guess it may proceed as Larry just got a downgrade to Cat 4 upon crossing the coast.

The downside is I'm going to Innisfail and Mission Beach which have copped the brunt so far. More later

I heard on the news this morning that there is another one forming behind Larry...

I'm going to CNS next week. Looks like I need to investigate travel insurance, and see if I actually have any. Are my red-e-deals refundable if the flight is cancelled?

Innsfail is the eye so I suspect Townsville will be equally affected as Cairns, I would not go, electricity will be off for at least 24 hours to begin with.

Damien - be aware that if you purchase insurance after the storm already developed then you may not be covered. Insurance is intended to cover unexpected costs.

It's not surprising really.

Thanks ksthommo. That's good to know.

It looks like I did the bookings on the wrong credit card, but that's not really a problem. If something happens, the most I'll need to cover is the accomodation deposit (unless we get stuck there).

Yes named Wati and is around Vanuatu.

Although still days away from hitting the Australian Coast.

I don't know about travel insurance but I would think that QF would
refund the red e-deals if flight is cancelled.

Or am I being naive?

Looks like access to Mission through Innisfail is cut, and Cairns accomodation is apparantly sold out with the islands being evacuated so access from Townsvill mioght be a better option fo royu if you really need to go.

I suspect Dunk Island is no longer the place that I remeber so fondly and there will be a bit of cleanup work required!

Don't bother, Qantas fully covers you in the event of a cancellation. It's the airline going broke you need to be worried about.

It doesn't matter if you're on a red-e-deal or fully flexible, you won't lose your money.

And on another note, everyone is going on about this second cyclone.

The thing has just entered BoM"s area of responsibility, it's thousands of kilomteres away.

The chance of a cyclone passing over a particular point of coastline is very low. Even the chance of it hitting any part of the Australian coastline as a cyclone is still low at this stage.

You would probably have better odds playing roulette than putting money on a second cyclone hitting NQ.

Except that the synoptic conditions are pretty much the same which increases the odds to those somewhat better than roulette, time will tell.

QF 784 BNE/CNS has cancelled is now QF 784 BNE/TSV, with the dreaded bus ride if you want it.

After talking with my people in Cairns, Innisfail and Mission Beach, no need to get in these folks way at this time, due to power out/road clean-ups etc both personal and business wise.

Changed bookings to go back on 10 April when this next Wati dude will be due ....

Good call, I doubt anyone will be able to get to Mission from Cairns for at least a day and the fact they have no water or power will only compound things. A builder on the radio who lives near clump point cannot get out his driveway and apparently the rainforest has been levelled. Good to hear very little human injuries but long term business is going to struggle, my thoughts are with all those up in what was a beautiful part of the world (and wil be again in the future).

I alluded before about the notorious Groundfeeder curse. Now I'm booked for Rockvegas Monday next week just in time to introduce myself to Wati! Latest estimate from BOM is that it may sit still for a day and then head south.

Seems like I'm covering all bases with these weather systems over the next few weeks.

VH-EBY 747-300
VH-EBC 330-200
VH-ZXE 767-300
+ 73H, 734, JQ 320s etc

all operated SYD - CNS today.. First QF 747 for CNS in a while.

MEL-NRT was also routed via CNS in order to transport stranded MEL-CNS pax [and any other additional QF pax from PER, ADL, HBA etc].

Cheers

We have an FT'er taking photo's of the devastated area - Press Photog is a native from TSV and his mobile message current says "I'm covering the Cairns Cyclone for the next couple of days". His photo's have made today's Courier Mail and his name in the list of photographers.

ksthommo, you need to use Shorterlink when you have links that size to post. It makes it much easier to view all posts in the thread, without having to use the left and right arrows
