Does anyone have any views on which has the better J service from Australia to Europe - JAL or CX?

Does anyone know what the status credit and points earn will be once JAL joins Oneworld?

Status Credits for JAL in business class will be the same as for all OneWorld airlines. I would not expect JAL to earn the status bonus that QF pays for QF, AA and BA flights only.

Personally I have been very happy with CX service and choose to use CX whenever possible. I have not flown JAL so cannot provide any first hand experience there.

Having only flown JAL in economy i can say the service is good and i am happy to fly them (doing so again in a couple of weeks).

I don't think you will go wrong with either option, just be aware the flights to some European destinations (LHR for example) using JAL will require an overnight stay in NRT.

Also consider your point of departure. If going out of MEL your JAL service is actually operated by.....QF. Better seat than the current CX seat and most JAL flights to Europe out of Tokyo have the new JAL shell sleeper seat which is also better than the current CX J class sleeper. Don't think that CX are actually offering their new seat yet, at least not on most aircraft.

We regularly fly JAL BNE-JFK in business. From BNE it is an old business class seat but quite comfortable. From NRT you get the shell flat seat which I find very comfortable. This is also on most flights to europe but not all.We find the JAL service to be good.I do enjoy the Japanese meal choices.
In 2006 we had award flights in business so flew CX SYD-HKG.Also flew them HKG-DBX.Both flights had the old type seats and the cabin did not feel as spacious as JAL(different aircraft though). The service was good but not quite to JAL standard.I did not enjoy the overnight flight to DBX.The only point in favour of CX was the lounge in HKG which certainly is much better than JAL lounges in NRT.In Australia both use the QF lounge.
So in the air I prefer JAL,on the ground CX.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Thanks all for the advice.

Currently it seems the JAL fare to Rome in J is $2K cheaper than CX so that certainly makes JAL attractive. I also like the JAL flight schedules, including the night at Narita outbound.

finally my first post!

things to consider when flying with JAL. Only 2 weekly services out of MEL with QF, so limited availability, they will transfer you to SYD with QF for connection to JAL daily service to Tokyo (Older business class seat but totally acceptable for day time flight). Downside being the 9:00 departure from Sydney makes for a very early start in MEL. Shell seats out of Tokyo to euorpe superb. Service can be hit and miss, but nobody does serivce like the Japanese when they get it right. Odly their western meal option is sometimes better than the Japanese:rolleyes:, except for breakfast always choose the Japanese (steamed fish and rice would have to be the healthiest way to start the day). There is at least 1 western language speaking FA, but that is usually German or French with limited english skills. If you enjoy Japanese culture this is a great way to travel with the benefit of almost half your travel being with QF (good or bad depending on your view of QF business product)

As they are not yet a Oneworld carrier your QF status gets you nowhere so expect the dreaded middle seat if flight is even half full, upper deck will also be impossible. They seam to be very focused on looking after their high status FF's. Will be flying to US later this year Melbourne, Tokyo, Chicago return (with a one sector upgrade to First - courtesy of a hit and miss customer service experience, which will give me a reason to post a trip report I guess:D) hope this helps paxman

As stated, JAL sleeper seats are superb - I'm 6'3".
As of 8 months ago sleeper seats are avbl all flights from Narita to London, Paris, New York and Chicago. Check their website for additional routes - they are adding more all the time.
JAL upcoming membership of Oneworld is a downer as far as I'm concerned. :( :( :(
Compared to Oneworld JAL award seats are much easier to get. Plus Oz to LHR Business is/was only 110,000 points compared to 250,000 plus on Oneworld.

Welcome to AFF topdrop and paxman:D
With JAL entering oneworld the would likely be instances where availability is reduced for redemptions but because they have entered an alliance the opportunites to earn and burn should be higher as well.

Yes.It is a problem trying to get my left brain talking to my right index finger especially at night and on a day where I could not get my nanny nap.
