This could be painful for CX as anecdotal evidence suggests they rely on overtime to staff many flights due to a shortage in pilots. The withdrawal of that goodwill could significantly affect operations.
The last time they tried this was in 2001 and the reaction from management was 51 summary dismissals which are legal in HK to try and decapitate the pilots union. The tactic was successful.
Unionized pilots will start the so-called “contract compliance,” in which officials will perform their assigned duties in strict conformance with their agreements, the Hong Kong Aircrew Officers Association said on its website yesterday. About 1,700 members based in Hong Kong, New Zealand and the U.S. will be asked to comply with the work-to-rule plans, it said.
