Hi all! Thought that I would bounce this idea off the frequent flyers here:

I will be flying out of HKG to SYD fairly soon and was wondering which you would choose in terms of being a better product?
- CX new J
- Qantas old F (747)

All suggestions welcome!

Btw, merry Christmas to one and all!

If you're not concerned about the triple status credits and extra points then I'd say go with CX.

In the comparison -- CX J. But if you're travelling after Jan 12th then you can jump on the QF A380 out of HKG (QF128 on Thurs/Fri/Sat/Sun). New QF F would easily trump CX J.

I think that even QF F on a 747 would have to beat new CX J.
Hard product might be a close call, although QF's IFE is pretty woeful compared to even old CX J.
Soft product on QF would get my vote

So, I should give an update on what I did...

Decided to go CX new J and cancelled my Qantas FASA. Paid $$$ for it and checked on Expertflyer and CX website seat selection to make sure the plane was in a 1-2-1 configuration like the 33E - even the website said it would be a 33E flight. But when I boarded the plane, it was an OLD CX J COFFIN configuration! Not at all pleased and would definitely have stuck with QF F instead if this was the case!!!

triple status credits and extra points
whaaaaat?? (unless you are referring to those on the HK double status deal who effectively get triple for QF F v CX J)

Having flown new CX J recently it is very good but.
CX J meals are so so, although less an issue for overnights.
I prefer Qantas IFE selection, but the CX screen is much larger and more friendly.
QF def wins for wines.

Ah. I'm not much of a wine drinker - prefer the whiskeys. CX serve JW Gold and I think QF serve Glenliver 12 yo? I guess it all comes down to single versus blended :) Can't fault the QF wines though to be honest!
QF IFE is good no doubt - problem is i have flown so much on QF that there's no more left that interests me :) maybe they should update it every month or so!

I know its a moot point as you've already travelled, but my vote would have been QF for the soft product. There's no real problem with QF old F hard product on this sort of flight (not really long haul) IMO (except IFE screen and reliability).

Also as far as whiskey concerned, would take QF - glenlivet 18 and/or chivas 18 over CX - JW gold. V different Whiskey story if it'd been CX first.

I agree on the food - mind you QF isn't much cop either.

I completely disagree on the IFE - not only is the selection much bigger on CX but I can also route my iPad through the IFE and play my videos on the in seat screen - no propping up the iPad to watch my TV shows - I have even chosen travel dates based on whether I was getting the new CX J. I also like the coffin seats.

Mind you the 20K lost points per trip through lack of status bonus is getting annoying (will cost me 100K points in 12 months :()

I realise you’ve already taken your trip, but the view from my dad, a seasoned MPC Diamond who is obviously nearly always on Cathay, is that the new J doesn’t rate compared to the old J, which he wasn’t a fan of either. Can’t remember all the issues, but there were a few, from things like solid seats (I guess it is new) to something actually falling off the seat (so bad engineering).

So I would have said QF F, but as always YMMV.

Personally I would take the Johnny Gold over The Glenlivet or Chivas 18yo. But that is just my personal preference. The Chivas 18 is ok, but I am always disappointed with the Glenlivet 18. But I just wish there was an airline that offered a decent scotch in any cabin (ok, BA nad CX have Johnny Blue, but its just an over-priced upgrade from the Gold and still not a patch on a decent Islay drop).

Yep NM and if I change roles with more predictable qualification on both QF and AA I will switch back to AA as well...
