Cruising choices with an active Pandemic

It was a bit non specific, but it was this part that was a bit of a worry, "which means it can float a long distance through the air and cause infection later when it is breathed in". I wonder how far that might be? Hopefully, yes, some more reliable sources would be good.

Though that is airborne as in aerosol.

The media report was on the dramatic side and so I will await to see how the various health bodies actually communicate what this means in terms of communicability.

Let's hope nobody gets the idea of starting a fire onboard to try to force disembarkation that way

While they might be going stir crazy on board, either way you are going to be in isolation somewhere and it won't be great.

I'd prefer a high end cruise ship to Xmas Island or a mining camp that hasn't been used for 12 months.

I suspect the alternatives in Japan would be an immigration centre or military camp.

Which was my point as the language used was not scientific at all and I would suspect is largely speculative rather than accurate. My guess is that the long distance comment has no scientific basis as this would be something quite different.

We know the the virus is a corona-virus and so aerosol spread was to be expected. ie as with other corona-viruses such as the flu, common cold.

So the latest announcement of it being airborne (aerosol) was one I was expecting.

How does flu spread?
Flu is spread by viruses floating in tiny droplets from a sick person's cough or sneeze. It is also spread when those droplets from a sick person land on a surface or object which is then touched by someone else who picks up the virus on their hands. The flu is not spread through air conditioning or ventilation systems.

I suspect the alternatives in Japan would be an immigration centre or military camp.

Total capacity of Japan's immigration detention centres/houses is around 4,000.

In recent years, the number of detainees held concurrently in custody in detention centers in all of Japan hovers around 1,400. Yet, worryingly, since some facilities are presently not in use, the total capacity is almost 2.5 times larger.

That's a good deal seeing as they'd already had the cruise. (That's the one where they've been on board for 14 days extra?). The inside people should be given help with their ensuing claustrophobia as well.

Princess Diamond passengers are getting their entire cruise refunded (that part went without a hitch and they were due to disembark when it hit the fan) assistance with flight home, plus 100% Future Cruise Credit Of the value of their original cruise.

Yes, and they all have access to telephone counselling now, plus they’ve opened up more movies through the TV and as much as they can do without giving them freedom. At the moment there is confusion as to whether the counter gets reset with each new case and that’s the issue causing stress now. They are just half way through the first one and new ones diagnosed yesterday.

The Brit who is blogging onboard and where I get all this info from, is on a UK pension and I know they are only allowed to be out of the country for 30 days in a year. That’s worrying him a little but surely the Government wouldn’t dare cut off his pension! Australian Centrelink registrants have the same restrictions.

And another 60 passengers diagnosed today according to Japan announcement. 130 passengers/crew now.

Holy smokes. I’d imagine it will take the cruise industry some time to recover from this.

Coming off the back of all those well publicised norovirus breakouts, this will be the last straw for some.

After getting norovirus on Celebrity a few years ago I was given a future cruise credit but my interest in using it was zero.

Is this on the Diamond Princess? Those poor passengers and crew.
This guy is doing a daily video. He’s quite exceptional.

He is doing more than a daily video :) Loved one of today's videos where he showed off the Japanese toilet.
The videos, interviews etc will certainly be keeping him occupied which is a genius idea really.

Sometimes I wish for a few moments (before I come to my senses ;)) that I hadn't resolutely decided not to join the FB brigade.

It would be good if he changed his settings so anon visitors could see his content.🤓

I know. I don’t like it but in times like this it’s worth an account.

This is getting a bit off topic, but hey.....

Yes I feel for the passengers, but remember they are in much larger cabins than the crew.

Other than a few privileged, the crew will largely be in "inside cabins", not have luxury appointments, sharing either the cabin or facilities (or both) with non-family members & many still expected to work to run the ship including delivery of meals to cabins individually with a whole lot of extra overhead processes to follow and facing the brunt of passengers who think they are entitled to take out their frustrations at the lock-down on the crew.

Totally agree with you. They will be getting paid. It’s possible that those passengers still stranded may not be if they’d used up all the leave and have now run out. But it’s a carp situation for everyone. Apparently the meals aren’t that great but on the other hand people aren’t exactly active to need the calories.

Three day old news now but not seen it posted here.

In case folks aren't aware, Taiwan has banned ALL international cruise ships from docking anywhere in the nation.

Edit: and South Korea will only allow ships to dock for fuel/supplies, no-one allowed to leave the ship.

From the ABC web site

”The Japanese Government put the ship on a mandatory quarantine period that is due to finish on February 19.

But passengers who have been in close contact with confirmed cases will have the clock reset and have to wait another 14 days from their last interaction with the infected person.”
