Does anyone else here credit their car rentals to AA?

I tend to use Europcar myself, but it a lot simpler overseas, as it just happens automagically. I think Europcar is the only one to give 60 points/day, vs 50 points/day for most others.

I have tried to credit from Avis but AVis preferred seems to not want to accept my AA number and credits to QF still..

However I was able to credit Hertz to AA recently (only good thing they managed to do on that rental) - a whopping 87 points for a GBP30 rental...

Got 50 AAdvantage points for a USD29 Alamo car rental in HNL in June; IIRC I had to pay 58¢ fee for the privilege.

(At least it allows me to keep my 2200 AAdvantage miles for another 18 months by keeping the account active.)

My Avis rentals credit to AA, but the earning rate really is pretty low. Prior to using AAdvantage, I used to have my Avis rentals credit to HHonors.

Biggest issue for me is that the points you earn are negligible compared to what you'd earn pushing to Qantas.

Frequent Flyer - Earning Points - Cars says that you earn 3 points/AU$ on QF, which is 120-200 points/day on average. 50 points/day isn't that bad considering that AA points are worth more when it comes to redeeming.

On overseas rentals, I think AA is a better deal, especially if you're hiring for a a few days or even a week.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Europcar gives 250 HHonor points/rental ... What is Avis's rate?

Yeah, but with Hertz and crediting to QF, an overseas (ie not Australian) rental is 700 points. The equivalent AA is 1 point/$ (exclu taxes etc I believe).

Huge difference on a one day rental.

You've got to keep an eye to the bonus miles. I recently had 2 Avis rentals (4 days & 7 days) in the US and missed out on the following deal:

Dates:
Now through December 31, 2007

Offer:
As an American Airlines AAdvantage member, enjoy the savings below with Avis. Now through December 31, 2007, you can earn up to 750 bonus miles on your next qualifying rental at participating Avis airport locations in the U.S. and Canada.

Rent for three days and earn 250 AAdvantage bonus miles. Use coupon number MUAA077.
Rent for four days or more and earn 750 AAdvantage bonus miles. Use coupon number MUAA081.
Also, remember to use your Avis Worldwide Discount (AWD) number K817100 to receive up to 25% off your next rental.

I didn't know about the deal until after I returned the car and when I tried to claim it, it was rejected on the basis that the car had been returned :(
So I was only getting the 50 miles/day and could've earned 1500 more!

Hello to all..................
Please excuse my limited knowledge of Loyalty Programmes but it seems you all like the AA Programme. If this is correct can you tell me why and is it better than QFF:confused: , or can you point me in the right direction to the tread concerned.

Thanks:p

Hi tykissy

This thread talks about the AAdvantage program, how you join and how you might use it.

I joined AAdvantage due to better redemption rates for awards.

For example I am booking two RTW business class tickets at a cost of 300K miles. On QF that would have cost 560K points and I would have to pay fuel surcharges on QF whereas I dont on AA.

The downside to AA is that I can't transfer Amex points to it and get the same rate as QF and you cant transfer any CC points to AA from an Oz based CC. ALso for my profile (mostly int'l business class) it is actually harder to qualify for AA's top tier compared to qualifying for QFs (e.g. this year's travel would have me qualifying for QF plat 4 times over whereas on AA it is only twice over - I dont believe I just typed that ).

There are lots of other quirks and it is worth reseraching to find the program that best fits your needs.

The AAdvantage Program has some features that work well for some people. It is not going to be better than QF in all cases. Generally, the benefits of AA over QF are as follows:
  • Better earning rate for AA miles over QF points for people who hold mid-tier status. AA Platinum member earns 100% bonus miles while the equivalent QF Gold member only earns 50% bonus miles.
  • AA Platinum status (and hence OneWorld Sapphire status) can be earned quickly if you happen to be taking the right flights in the right fare types. See this thread for information on the AA Platinum Challenge.
  • Award flight redemptions using AA miles cost significantly less miles that the same flight award redemption using QF FF points. This is even more pronounced when using premium cabin awards (business and first class).
AA does not charge fuel fines on award tickets, which can be a significant real dollar saving over awards using QF FF points.
  • If you attain AA Executive Platinum status, you are given 8 eVIP upgrades, each of which can be used to upgrade up to 3 flight segments. These eVIPs carry significant value to many people. QF only offers upgrades using FF points, and the number of points required for the upgrade is often more than the number of AA miles required for an award ticket in the upgraded cabin.
  • AA offers confirmed upgrades for their FF members on AA flights, QF does not confirm upgrades on QF flights until the day of the flight.

However, AA does not work out best for everyone. Some of the cheap fares that are often used by passengers may not earn miles or status in the AA program, such as Qantas Red-e-Deals. And if you don't actually fly on AA flights, then you are not going to be able to take advantage of the AA upgrades. You cannot use AA miles to upgrade a QF flight. An AAdvantage Platinum or Executive Platinum member does not get lounge access to AAdmirals Club lounges when travelling on AA domestic flights (unless they have a same-day international connection), while QF Gold and Platinum members do get lounge access in those circumstances.

Thanks Simongr...............very helpful info, thanks for sharing. Yes I can see I will have do some RESEARCH. Eeeeeck.
I have been with Qantas for many years and have had some great world trips all in business class and have loved the experiences in the lands that I have visited.
Sorry for the realization of typing something that doesn't quite compute............but I understand what you mean, it obviously has its benefits.:D

Out of interest how many lifetime Status CRedits do you have? If you are close to Lifetme Gold then it might be something to hold off doing until you hit that. A lot of people I know of are waiting to get that before switching to AA.

I have been in the process of doing a detailed spreadsheet that compares earn/burn/status rates on the two programs. I might finish that off shortly and upload it here and add in some other comparisons in a sticky thread - maybe next week once I have sorted out my current travel plans ;)

Thank you Nelly M for info............will have to look into all of this. Will wait for a weekend when I have nothing to do.............HA HA.;)
Ta again

This is not an issue for me.............I am nowhere near qualifying as yet. I will have to lots more flying...........which I don't have a problem with at all, its just finding the money that a problem:D :D :D .

I will lookout for your spreadsheet..........sounds excellent. Keep up the good work, as it helps us all, maybe I will have something offer oneday.
