Hi,

Has anyone used the Comm back Gold (allianz) travel insurance? does it cover volcanic ash and terrorism? and has anyone made a claim and had problems? cheers Corinne

I called cba and anz about if i decided not to travel due to the recent terrorism attacks in the countries i was going to. Apparently that isn't covered by either of the credit cards insurance. No idea what regular companies cover in this regard.

An attack while you are in that country may be covered but you have to check.

A word of warning with this insurance. Be very careful as you need to activate the insurance for each trip/ booking. This has been recently updated and my parents have had a big issue recently with a claim for cancelation.

That's not quite true though much better if you do activate. There is a basic insurance provided for any eligible credit card holder but you do need to go in via NetBank and register/activate to get an upgraded policy. No spend required any longer to qualify which is quite a bonus.

I have never had to claim but a couple of friends had claims processed without too many hassles

Well claim for cancelation was denied due to illness (non pre existing) BEFORE travel. At the time the policy just stated that it needed to be activated before travel . The booking was made 12 months in advance and cancelled a week before departure.

Thank you everyone.. I have activated the card. I haven't been able to find any travel insurer that will cover terrorism..

If DFAT issues a 'do not travel' then you are to some extent probably covered by the airlines anyway as they will usually let you reschedule. Probably the same for hotels (or simply book ones that are refundable).

Stepping up security is probably a good thing :) If they weren't you might have cause for concern.

Yes I agree, glad they have stepped up hehe.. cheers

Just an update on a previous posting (can't find the actual thread now!). We had planned NY in the Marlborough / Kaikoura region the the South Island of New Zealand but after the earthquake we decided it was not a sensible decision so we approached Air New Zealand to cancel the flight and they refused. So we made a claim on our Westpac Black car insurance through QBE. They have just settled the claim and paid out in full for the cancelled flights. Just goers to show TI with CC is as good as if not better than standard TI and costs nothing if you book according to the CC TI T&C.

Bouquets to QBE. Excellent service from Westpac and QBE.

The claim was almost $2000 and they deducted the $200/250 claim fee, as do all TIs. I'm very happy with the result.

I'm also quite happy to go with my CC TI. Had a couple of claims over the years and the insurers paid up eventually. A bit like pulling teeth, but if you have the doco you will win in the end. And then there's always the ombudsman...

Our experience is that it's just the same or better than standalone insurance. This is including the last claim for earthquake cancellation and our $32000 claim for ruptured quadriceps tendon in Vienna one Christmas. In fact the most difficult to deal with was Travelmore some 20 years ago where we had to argue strongly to get paid after a car theft. The Westpac black earth CCTI has been very responsive.

Yeah but it's $250 hit per CC claim compared to $350 annual policy... No excess and multiple claims at the one time

IME all TIs have an excess of some kind. For us usually $200-250. You can pay extra to eliminate it but costs more than the excess.

BTW: What annual policy do you use?

Jetstar credit card travel insurance through ACE travel insurance is like a scam, as they do not pay! I accidentally had two travel insurances one through Jetstar and one through TID as Ace said they wouldn't cover the cruise leg of my trip, so my 2 insurances overlapped by one day which happened to be the day my daughter fell very ill. I took her to the doctor via taxi from the hotel and the bill was a few hundred including medication. ACE who is through Jetstar credit cards didn't want to know about it and ignored my application and numerous phone calls. After 3 months I received a response that to be eligible for any medical claim you need to stay over night at the doctors or hospital for a minimum of 24hrs. I then realized TID insurance started on that day and they paid out no problem including the taxi fare to and from the doctor, the dr bill and the medication. So since then I always use TID they are great. DO NOT USE ACE!!! They won't pay as I've discovered on other review sites.

Was the 24 hr requirement anywhere in the T&C?

... and I'm not considering using it as I avoid JQ let alone their insurance.

Yes it was in the very small print I discovered after requesting a copy of the t&c's. This company has more t&c's than any other travel insurance company that it seems they can get out of paying in any situation. Also the reviews online strongly reflect this. I also now avoid JQ due to the flight attendants nearly letting my brother die on DPS-SYD flight after he collapsed in his seat of fake alcohol poisoning resulting him to be rushed to hospital and on a dialysis machine for a week as his kidneys were shutting down. He tried to tell the flight attendant something is seriously wrong many times and the attendant told him to get over himself. When he asked for more vomit bags or big plastic bags they told him they don't have an endless supply. He said he'll have no choice to vomit in the aisle as he can't stand up. They then gave him more vomit bags. Appalling!
