MrP was given an upgrade from J to F on Emirates - on check-in - our bookings weren't linked. He asked at the desk if I could have it - not allowed. He asked if we could swap on the plane and was told it would depend on the crew. I was very happy for him and not the least bit upset. But it was nice to get that red light when boarding and I too was upgraded to F - my first experience. We often travel apart but usually in the same class.

Ah such wonderful problems. I have no status, my wife has no status. Zero chance of upgrade. no need to stress of who's getting the upgrade from ultra discount Economy to Y+.

Not necessarily. I would say slightly above zero. So it may happen at the most unexpected time and place.

The gentleman and I have travelled separately when we could only get one award ticket per flight. He flew F the day before and I flew F the following day. Back in the good old FASA days...... sigh.

Well done. However travelling in EK F might as well be considered travelling in separate cabins though in same class. Is there seat to seat SMS in EK F?

I think it speaks to the "disruption" that one of the other posters was worried about. I don't think they wanted lots of back and forth.... That's fair enough. I value the peace and quiet in J too.

I'd always thought that cabin swaps were a one off for that reason too. You don't need two people shuffling back and forth constantly.

And generally men are larger than women (in my case twice the size) so I cannot understand why any woman would want the husband to sit in middle seat while she sits in window or aisle seat. For me a middle seat is torture and know for a fact my wife wouldn't want me to endure 14 hours of torture.

I guess the 'YMMV' flip-side is that many people may not understand why a husband would not give their partner the better seat, or why the partner should be forced to sit next to a stranger. Some people see marriage as an equal partnership - not one where one is subjugated simply because they are 'the wife'.

The compromise in the 'equal partnership' arrangement would be a swap of seats once or twice during the flight so you both have the good and the bad.

I've done more than enough solo flights for business purposes so when I'm travelling with my partner, I prefer to travel together. If we were offered a solo upgrade I'd let my partner take it, but I'm not certain she would accept. I suppose we'll worry about if and when it happens.

We both like a window seat, so we take turns. One sits in the window and the other often the middle seat (aisle if we think it wont be a full flight) then on the return we get the seat we didnt get on the way there.

No issues with how this would be divvied up as I was the only one from the family on that flight though I did get a female amenities bag from EK.

I think I'd do the same too. To my partner or friends, being put in a premium cabin would be such a novelty for them, I remember my first time being upgraded

I travel much more than my wife and girls, but I agree small touches like bringing home a nice FEMALE amenities kit helps Shows you are thinking of them!!

Last year, I was on a VA domestic flight sitting in 2C (J) and my partner was sitting in 3C (Y). The cabin supervisor noticed the situation (as we were talking to each other) and happily moved her to 2A which was vacant. She was even served J catering.

Ive posted somewhere before that on a SYD>AKL flight, the FA noticed the surnames and Mr Pax was heading to the rear and Mrs Pax was in 2D and the FA asked if they were travelling together and then told him to sit in that seat and enjoy. He seemed more than happy to take his assigned seat and if it wasn't for the surnames, the FA wouldn't have known they were a couple.

Meanwhile there was a pax way at the rear (who walked on last) that had already asked 3 of the FAs to move to J and been knocked back 3 times already. The last time, our FA said, "He WILL sit in that (assigned) seat if its the last thing I do!".
