Its probably been mentioned somewhere in some credit card discussion but not sure how long I would have to search for it...

If you had a relative in the US who was eligible for a credit card in one of the frequent flyer schemes, do you think it would be possible to to geth them to apply for a supplementary card in your own name and attached to your own USDM or AA account without going through the whole rigamorole of needing to have a social security number of US credit rating/history??

Anyone, anyone?? (from Ferris Bueller) or is it a either really straight forward no or got people stumped?? :)

I suspect that the FF membership would need to be in the same name as the Primary Cardholder (ie you could not have several FF memberships attached to the one account or the FF membership in the name of the supplementary cardholder). There may also need to be some identification processes to go through, even for supplementary cardholders. However I am not familiar with the US system so you probably need to do some research of the internet to get the answer

Correct. Most companies require the secondary cardholder's SS# so that they can do a background check before approving and issuing the card. I just went through this process with AMEX after adding an add'tl cardholder.

Given that in Australia all points earned by primary and supplementary credit card holders go to the frequent flyer account of the primary holder, I suspect the same would apply in USA. Therefore you would fail to get points directed to your frequent flyer account. Even if that is possible it maybe complicated or impossible to pass the US ID checks, which always seem to involve a US social security number.

Yes usually possible although some banks/ issuers ask for supplementary card holder's social security number. Also the main card holder will be responsible for all the charges you click up on the credit card!!!
