See, this is what I meant - SQ have addressed the media directly and they have announced the target opening date is in fact “late 2026” and not “September 2026”. Each to their own with the fine play on words but in my humble opinion, September isn’t quite yet “late” 2026. But we will see, they might surprise us.

Yup, September does seem like a bit of an unlikely timeline considering this is the current state of things:


I also did some digging for fun, regarding the Perth SKL refurb as that situation was by far the most comparable for what’s happening with Melbourne SKL - back then SQs target date for Perth refurb completion was “by the end of 2023”. It in fact didn’t open until February 2024, so it will be interesting for sure to see if this one actually opens by year end.

Yup, September does seem like a bit of an unlikely timeline considering this is the current state of things:

It in fact didn’t open until February 2024, so it will be interesting for sure to see if this one actually opens by year end.

I thought maybe The House lounge as it was already had pretty good "bones" so maybe they wouldn't need to rip everything up. But no, it's a totally new space.

No way is this ready by September...hoping it'll be ready for my flight just before Xmas though...

Christmas would be a safe bet in relation to “by the end of 2026”, that essentially is the end of 2026, I would guesstimate everything would be done by 6 months from now, although I do have to wonder what was up with whoever leaked this as “opening in September 2026” to start with, a claim that made so many news articles only for SQ to fix the record only a week later.

In fact I would go further to say I think SQ would want to have their shiny new lounge open for Christmas peak time, so you’re probably fine… but then again refer to what I said what happened with Perth SKL and their original timeframe.

If regrettably they do a Perth and it opens in early 2027 instead, well at least you’ll still have the Air New Zealand lounge at MEL - this is a far better experience in all aspects over the current SKL there in my opinion.

Yep the Air NZ lounge is pretty good. But I still prefer the food at the current SQ lounge even though it's a bit average. I usually hop between them before a SQ flight!
