Indeed, I get the impression Aussies are too busy emptying supermarket shelves to go on holiday!
cheers skip

Not at the supermarkets I frequent. And at Costco, when don't shoppers here have full trollies?

I think it is more that hand sanitiser has a run on.

When's the last time anyone saw hand sanitizer for sale in Coles or Woolies? I haven't seen it in over a month. I had half a bottle at home and was using it sparingly but it's run out now.

I got a bottle of Dettol hand wash at local Coles on Thursday-but was lucky last.

Im buying it from anywhere I can, First Aid companies, Industrial/Commercial cleaning suppliers, equine dentists and vets and now breweries. Ethanol is the issue as you want a min 70%

I buy for office and factories so Ive been buying dozen of bottles at at a time, I currently have a couple of dozen on back order.

Have not seen any. We still have some we bought long ago and only use it when we are out. Soap and water is more effective anyway, though some say it can be harsh on their skin after a while.

I believe any Gin Distilleries are now making it, but they tend to sell out too. Some sell online. Four Pillars Gin - a small Australian distillery

If you have a distillery near you it may be worth a call.

Following 14 day confinement I went shopping at Woolies yesterday. Purchased essentials, nothing extra. Used self checkout.

I couldn’t get flour nor TP. Sale of their own brand paracetamol - cheap, 70 cents for 20 tabs - was limited to 2 packs.

Yeah we use soap and water for the most part. I do like to use the sanitizer when I handle my contact lenses.

OMG that Four Pillars stuff is $40 a bottle and sold out!!

Our local Coles actually had pasta flour today, first time I’ve seen it in at least a month. They also had loo, paper, tissues and paper towel. Forgot to look for hand soap but we don’t need any at the moment. Plenty of Coles branded products like nappies, flour etc.

There was a nearly empty bottle of sanitiser on the kitchen table at one of my work locations. It's now in my car, as that will last me ages and they had a full bottle ready to go. Ah, the benefits of rank!

I would have bought some from the supermarket if I had seen it. Honest!

I have had an ongoing use for several years for hand sanitiser on a regular basis and was a bit disturbed when I when to replenish on 3 Feb. I tried three different places where there was usually large quantities on the shelves at reasonable prices and there was none and they couldn't tell me when they would replenish. I tried another and they had a similar product but wanted 250% of the normal price

The escalation in price set off alarm bells in my head and I immediately came home and started searching repeatedly for my usual brand and found there was only one bottle left I could find in the whole of Victoria which subsequently disappeared as I continued my searching. Then my other half came home and told me they were having difficulty sourcing any for their medical clinic

I knew I would be visiting relatives in SA in a couple weeks so started searching there. Couldn't find any within 20km of Adelaide nor in any of the towns along the highway. Then searched some of the suburbs way south of Adelaide and came across a lone chemist with 4 x 1 litres at the normal price and placed an immediate click and collect order and sent a relative (who told me they thought I was completely mad) to collect the order.

Premonition? Panic buying, probably yes, because I was horrified of the extortionate price escalation and I was running out of supplies. Hoarding, I don't believe so seeing it was something I needed and it has been my normal practice for years to only buy 2-3 times a year and to buy a few months worth whenever I see a low price. (I have since offered one of them each to friends & neighbours if they run out and can't find some themselves.)

Is my behaviour deemed hoarding? For many weeks since panic buying began, I have not been able to find the Coles free range pork mince, but regular pork mince was nearly always available. This morning, nothing at the first Coles, and when I went to the second one, there were five packs of the free range pork mince. I bought four. Now I begin to suspect it's all been bought during the elderly hour in the morning. I didn't think the free range one would be that popular since it's more expensive.

At work we've had hand sanitiser and masks on order since beginning of Feb. Our veterinary medical suppliers (three we regularly buy from - they've said they won't supply non-regular customers) have no ETA for sanitisers, surgical gloves or masks. We run out of masks this coming week which means all dental work ceases (dental work in pets is never routine - always lots of calculus, gingivitis and periodontitis which means contaminated aerosol is a serious risk). Yet every shop I go into has a bottle of sanitiser on the counter for customer and staff use - where do they get it?

This morning Mrs C was in Woolies when they announced they had hand sanitiser: only available from the help desk, only one bottle (375ml) per customer. They had about 100 bottles which seemed to be going down very quickly as everyone obediently lined up for their one bottle.

I am aware of a whisky distillery in Moreland Council area who has convert to making sanitiser. Although distribution is only to essential services orgs and in bulk containers - need tk wtch dont breach dangerous good storage regs if buy in large quantities.

Starwood in Port Melbourne is also turning out "sanitiser" for essential services (along with Four Pillars gin distillery out in the Yarra Valley).
Basically 70% alcohol with no aloe vera or gel additives.
I use Four Pillars Navy Strength..... internally.

There has been peripheral damage from the public buy up.
Stuff like Chlorhex 4 surgical wash that I get through a fair bit of , none available anywhere.
Even betadine Iodine wash is out at Chemist warehouse, what on earth is the average joe doing with it ?
Iodine stains like crazy… grumble grumble

If you want to panic buy chocolate, Kmart has Lindt bunnies for $2.
