Indeed, I get the impression Aussies are too busy emptying supermarket shelves to go on holiday!
cheers skip

Not at the supermarkets I frequent. And at Costco, when don't shoppers here have full trollies?

I think it is more that hand sanitiser has a run on.

Indeed pauly…but public education did not help the toilet paper rout, rather it showed the thoughtful among us the fragility of social order.
I agree that we should try to keep the pigeons settled , encourage folks to wash their hands and not waste masks.

You are arguing for calm social order and I support that , but if social order fails I would then choose to survive...
The guard dog idea was really just a thought bubble in print...
I do happen to live somewhere that suits a guard dog and I am qualified to train and own one.
Police stations are a long way away.

But in context, all we saw was the rabid buyers and maybe those rolls aren't actually still even in Australia. Same with the gels. Because all us boring shoppers don't rate a mention in the media.

And this is why healthy people want to wear masks, because other people are not considerate and dont cover their mouths.

I know half the room says healthy people dont need to wear masks but any barrier is better than nothing.

Two people have been filmed having a bitter argument on a Sydney train after a woman let out a cough without properly covering her face.

The man and woman, sitting opposite one another on a Sydney train, were filmed having a bitter dispute over the cough.
The man, who called the woman “disgusting”, took off his sunglasses and said, “Can you cover our mouth when you cough please?”
The woman fired back, “I did not open my mouth when I coughed. I coughed inside my mouth.”
“That’s disgusting,” the man responded.
“Yeah, well you’re disgusting too,” the woman said.

Ive become the crazy lady in my office over hand washing - Im sure some coworkers are hoping I catch it first just to shut me up but Im keep bleating about "wash your hands", "when was the last time you washed your hands?" and "you just touched elevator buttons, go wash your hands".

Not crazy, it’s what we all need to be doing. Hand washing on the hour, before eating, after bathroom and any public communal exposure. Social distancing. Don’t touch your face. Repeat repeat repeat.

We all have hand sanitiser next to our computers now as well, but hand washing more effective.

All she needed to do was say sorry my mistake. But then to cough at him? Nasty piece.

Don’t worry I get it :) My point is even writing it then puts it in the public space, frightens someone, someone else thinks it’s a good idea and suddenly with the power of social media, a kick from alarmist media and botched messaging from the government you have more panic.

Oh and I don’t argue on AFF :) I’m the peacemaker around here. :)

Ok, actually it’s not half the room.

It’s 100% agreed from medical experts that wearing a mask is non effective prevention for healthy people using preventatively in day to day instances.

And also it’s not better than nothing.

In fact because most people don’t know how to properly select, wear or most importantly look after a mask that it might increase your chance of infection. Why? Because people don’t realise that mostly you can’t reuse the mask once worn - but they do, they put it down somewhere they think is clean - it isn’t clean, they contact transmit an infection onto the mask using their hands by mistake when they take on/off or adjust (very easy to do) and if it is a reusable mask they don’t sterilise it properly before reusing.

The virus is aerolised to a point where a mask will not stop it in day to day instances.

and yet every medical expert.. faced with any prospect from the great unwashed masses.. wears a "non effective" paper mask.

If the medical experts were all wearing p3 masks… it would make some sense.. but as it is trust is attacked from the mixed message.

Ok, so you are probably seeing random vision in the media that is contributing to you thinking this way. And again I 100% agree with you the media is not helping people feel safe with mixed messaging.

In most cases of suspected diagnosis (and let’s say outside outside a dedicated flu clinic because in one of them the staff will be kitted up very differently) the healthcare professional protocol is actually to put the mask on the patient.

The protocols will also see the mask being placed on the healthcare professional as well as a secondary measure because if you have a suspected infected patient they are then having to conduct a swab test which is how they are testing for the virus at the moment.

But to my point in the post above which I won’t repeat in full the healthcare professional is trained in the use of the mask and when it is going to be effective.

The general public wearing one around the place as they go about their lives will do nothing and in fact may work against them.

My Dad was at Coles at 7am yesterday and managed to get me 1 * 12 pack of Toilet Paper as they were enforcing the 1 packet per person limit - which should have been the case from last Monday. They probably need to do the same with other staples like hand wash and tissues. I actually thnk COles & Wollie need to use reward card data to prevent people from buying more than 1 packet a week, until things dies down.

This craziness prompted me to clean out the pantry over the weekend, so I have some room to add the odd long shelf like product here and there over the next few weeks.

Im not buying more pantry stuff but knowing that 86yr mum in law is next door, try to add toilet paper or a few extra things in case she needs it. Shes still going out on Friday to do her weekly shop but I know if she cant find it, she'll come to us. She has 3 kids but we're the ones she tends to come to to "fix" things.

Bought 3 packets of deeko paper napkin/serviettes for just in case but also have aloe vera tissues as a backup. Not hoarding and they will be used. Im happy to go without if we can supply her.

At one hospital I have worked at I was able to change things around.Virtually everywhere the medical staff and nurses don those masks when a person is isolated awaiting viral test results or if demonstrated to have the flu.The patient often was not forced to wear a mask.
The infectious diseases physician agreed it made more sense to insist the patient wore the mask. The hospital admin readily agreed when it was pointed out this would at least halve the use of disposable masks.
Of course I am just a country physician not a medical expert.

My daughter was in Arnhem Land working just before the wet and the rivers rise and so is well used to having some food in the cupboard. I don't need to worry about her on that at least.

2 x friends and about 12 of their friends are at the airport, heading to the Philipines right now.

I just asked him where does he keep his toilet papper.... "asking for a friend" :)

Good to hear that people upon reflection think they may have gone overboard with the TP buying and are asking if 'Foodbank' could use it. (Heard Interview w' Foodback re impact of the virus on isolated people, and FB's volunteer delivery people).

From the weekend paper :-

Sydneysiders in Wollstonecraft, Balmain and St Ives hoarded the most toilet paper in the country last week amid a flurry of panic buying spurred by coronavirus fears.

Data from online toilet paper retailer Who Gives A cough, prepared for The Sun-Herald, shows how relatively affluent suburbs registered the biggest spikes in toilet roll stockpiling

You are effluent, Kim!
