Hello Community!

A small group of us are planning a trip to Tokyo in February 2019. We found accommodation via Airbnb, however, I went to go book it last night and I noticed the price has risen by over $700. I realised the group was using the link (with dates) on Whatapp to review/compare it with their own research in the past week.

Is there any way around this or would it be reasonable to message the host directly and see if they can set the advertised price?

Many thanks
Drew

The cookie thing is a myth.
Either the host manually changed the price for whatever reason, or they have smart pricing on (which is AirBNBs algorithm, which doesn't use cookies to calculate prices)

Thanks AisleSeat

I'm guessing there's no way around it other than looking for alternative accommodation?

I assume you mean Feb 2020 not 2019. ;)

AirBnB is somewhat limited in Japan. It wasn't "legal" at all until recently.
It has now been made legal nationwide, with limits and host registration required. Each property listed on airbnb has same safety and registration requirements as a normal hotel, the amount of nights booked per year is limited and each jurisdiction can decide if they allow it or not.
eg, Tokyo Prefecture may allow it, but Shinjuku ward might not.
The building management also has to approve. eg Minato ward might allow airbnb, but the apartment complex manager doesn't.

When the new rules came in, something like 2/3rds of listings in Japan disappeared.

How large is the group and how long is the planned trip?
