hello all, just have a quick quick questions regarding connection times.....

I am urgently planning SYD-HKG-BKK flying CX, will be in Y with a 5 mates... there are two options, syd-hkg (3h35minute transit) - bkk OR syd-hkg(1h10minute transit)-Bkk

would it be relatively safe to proceed with 1h10minute connection?

It is a legal connection time and in the even that there was a problem CX would sort you out onto the next service

If the 1hr 10 min connection is valid per the CX timetable, and on a single itinerary, then it is safe. The connection process at HKG usually takes around 10 mins from leaving the aircraft to passing through security screening and up to the departures level. Then it depends on the arrival and departure gates as to how long it takes to get to the departure gate. Worst case should take less than 20 mins if you walk fast.

Note that boarding usually commences between 20 and 30 mins before departure depending on the type of aircraft and number of passengers.

But of course it all depends on if the arriving flight in on time. Any flight can be late, and a 3 hour delay would possibly upset both connections.

I have made successful connection at HKG in the 1-1.5 hour range. But nobody can guarantee you will arrive on time.

If you have lounge access, then a longer connection may be warranted.

If the booking is not on the same ticket from CX 1 hr 10 min is too short for transit in HKG,
even perfectly fine flights can get up to 10 mins delay, and immigration que for foreigners
can be quite long sometimes, unless you are a HK resident with a smart ID card, then you can
insert your ID card, scan your thumb and walk pass ! (fastest in the world I think...)

Sometime it also take sometime for the checked baggage to come out...

3hr35mins is no that long, HKG has heaps of activities to kill time... I like the postoffice in terminal one, if you have excess baggage and don't want to pay just post it !

But for a CX-CX connection, there is no need to clear immigration nor collect bags. Even if the boarding pass for the second flight cannot be issued at the source, there is no reason for bags not to be tagged to BKK and the BP can be collect at the Transfer desks on the arrivals level before going through the security check and up to departures level.

Thanks for the quick replies, I shall confer with my mates & see what they would like to do.....we are of the opinion that the faster to BKK the better!

I have lounge access as OW Sap (AA plat thanks to plat challenge) but highly unlikely I can sneak 5 other non-status guests in.......

We're booking today and I'll persuade for a 1h10connection.....

"On the single ticket" I mean on the same itinerary.

BA also flies SYD=>BKK, should check it out as well and can avoid
going up and down in Asia.....

yes we had a look at other airlines and direct flights but we will be returning to HKG afterwards & quick look reveals the cheapest flight for quick visits to BKK & HKG is SYD-(HKG)-BKK-HKG-SYD flying CX.......

In October we had a 1 hour connection in HKG flying CX on to BKK.We even had time to have a shower in the Pier before boarding the BKK flight. The BKK flight left I think from gate 61.It was one of the closest to the Pier.

Here is my Hong Kong transit story from late 2005 to show how great CX can be...

I had seperate tickets KUL-HKG and HKG-SIN. (Yes, I realise the stupidity of that journey :) but I wanted to fly Cathay rather than other airlines that time)

the KUL-HKG flight was on a CX flight on MH metal and the HKG-SIN flight was on CX metal/number. There was 1:15 between the arrival and departure.

I emailed Cathay with the flight details/PNR's before I travelled and requested they link the 2 tickets, but never got a reply and don't know if they did or not.

At KUL, I got my bag checked through, but they couldn't issue me my 2nd boarding pass due to checking in with MH. Told me to collect pass in HKG. Tried again at the CX lounge, but they still couldn't help.

The MH flight was late. I was pretty worried I was going to miss my flight. When I arrived in HKG, a Cathay rep was waiting for me with a sign showing my name/flight. I said hello, and he then took me for a bit of a jog through the airport to the nearest transfer desk, asked me for my bag receipt and passport, then they gave me my BP for the next flight (upgraded :) ), and while jogging with me to my next flight at the other end of the airport he was frantically on the phone ensuring that my bag was due to join me on the flight. Straight through security (express line) and he then escorted me over to where my flight was due to depart. Got there a couple of mins before it was boarding IIRC.

I would have never made it if they didn't help!

I believe the minimum connection is 1 hour at HKG CX-CX, but can't be totally sure.

From a recent booking I did, I know that 50 mins is valid as a connection but don't know how much less is permitted

I would've thought that if CX will sell you a ticket SYD-HKG-BKK with a 1 hr 10 min transit time, then it would fall within their acceptable transfer time. CX's customer service should be able to answer the question, but the last time I tried to get through (Dec 07), I gave up after 20 minutes on hold.

If you have separate tickets SYD-HKG-SYD and HKG-BKK-HKG, and have to pass through Immigration, then 1 hr 10 min will not be long enough, especially, if you have to get to the far CX gates (Gates 60 and upwards are quite a long way from Immigration).

Dave is right for sure, i have been on 50 minute connections CX/CX and CX/KA no problems. Good airport.
