I am a little confused. After requlifying Platinum, additional Status credits required to maintain by Dec 2012 changes to Acheived. I expected it to reset to 800 for the next cycle with an updated date to maintain based on the date the requal was achieved, so July 2013 ?

With re-qualifying your "year" stays fixed; it's only when qualifying to move up a level that yon "year" changes.

So what is happening with SC's between now and Dec '12. They are not going towards my next requalification ?

.... not to WP level anyway.

There is a 'partner' level that you may grant depending on how much more you may earn.

If Velocity introduce a Über WP they may ...

So what about the rolling 12 months that we are supposed to benefit from ! I wont get enough for 'partner' due to expiring SC's. Not happy if paying for fares with higher SC's and they are wasted, then at the other end I miss out on requal when the wasted SC's would have got me over the line.

Rolling was never meant to be for maintaining membership, only ever for upgrading to next level. This was always pretty clear in the terms and also discussed at length in other threads on AFF. If the date reset as soon as you hit 800 SCs that would mean the previous year may have only been a few months.

You don't need to waste SCs - try a family pooling arrangement where only 250 SCs pooled to someone else gets them Silver.

Also, remember that Gold and Platinum partner benefits have been reduced to only 500/1000 SCs respectively on top of the 800 Plat requal, so it's not as far off as you may think.

Seems as though it might actually be in my interests to fly on saver fares and plan for the correct number of SC's to requal as close to my requal year as possible.

so if I have 1360 SC and my requal is April next year am I entitled to give a gold membership?
is there anywhere where I can do it online.
I understand they have just moved the ballpark to 1000 SC but are telling me that once I got to 1000 SC in april I now need to earn another 500 SC to gift gold.
so in my mind I had to hit 1500 SC before
and still have to hit 500 SC. then another 300 to maintain before April 13.

No, you only need to get 1300 after your Plat qual date to gift gold, or 1800 to gift Plat. They should phone you, but if not give the Plat call centre a call.

I have only ever flown VA and would prefer to just adjust my flying to suit the requirements.

There is still some ambiguity around the new terms for companion gold or platinum when one is upgraded to Platinum and how many status credits are needed to award Gold and Platinum. The terms for a platinum member are;

Platinum Member means a Member who has earned, in the previous 12 months, the number of Status Credits required to upgrade to or maintain that Membership Level, as set out in clause 7.14.

To get to Platinum you can only be upgraded from the levels below (excluding Status Match) and this is monitored by a daily status review and there is points level to reach as well as qualifying sectors;

Daily Status Review is the daily assessment of a Member’s Status Credit balance for an upgrade to their Membership Level based on their Status Credits balance.

The terms state Platinum can award Gold Companion once earning 500 SCs following their upgrade or review date, with the earn rate 1,000 SCs to award Platinum Companion.

I can't understand, from looking at these terms, where people are saying it's now 1,300 and 1,800 as it reads "following their Upgrade or Review Date". I don't think you can say you need 800 + 500 or 1,000, as where does it say once you have re-qualified and then earned another 500 or 1,000SCs respectively?

You would have needed to have maintained Platinum anyway at your review date to be in the position to earn the additional 500 or 1,000 SCs needed to award companion Gold or Platinum.

The terms clearly state following upgrade or review date with re-qualification not being mentioned. There has actually been no official word on this from Virgin/Velocity since the change on the website and in the terms and yet and some people have been upgraded on the way I believe it reads and others say the were rejected. Until the terms are changed or there is official word from Virgin who knows what it actually is as there is other's adamant it's 1,300 or 1,800.

Companion Gold Membership and Companion Platinum Membership
13.20 When a Platinum Member earns 500 Status Credits following their upgrade or Review Date the Member is entitled to nominate a family member or friend who is a Velocity Frequent Flyer Member to a Gold level of Membership (Companion Gold Membership).
13.21 When a Platinum Member earns 1,000 Status Credits following their upgrade or Review Date, their nominated Companion Gold Member will automatically be upgraded to Platinum Membership (Companion Platinum Membership). If they haven’t nominated a Companion Gold Member, then they are entitled to nominate a Companion Platinum Member.

If you take that line then someone requalifying could only get this benefit after their reviewed date. So that could give out partner gold after earning the first 500 SC in the year, which would be 300SC before they requalifying again. Somehow I don't think so.

Agree. Otherwise every single person who requalifies for Plat will get partner gold! That makes no sense. The call centre are saying the same (another thread discusses this).

I'm assuming the rates were changed as you could effectively "gift" gold or platinum through pooling for much lower rates than the platinum benefits, which also didn't make.sense.

Agree with OP that the T&Cs are not clear, but that was the case.before the rates changed as well.

That is the way it reads, remember if you don't requalify you can't be in the position to earn the SCs needed award companion.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

No they won't as it reads another 500 or 1,000 after review date or after your upgrade, not after re-qualifying.

Sorry but just think about it. Here is an example timeline:

  • * 2012 requalify at 800 SC
    * later in 2012 Review date passes balance drops to 0 SC
    * 2013 Earn 500 SC - post review date. As per your interpretation they can now give out gold.
    * Later in 2013 Get to 800 SC and requalify.

As you can see every person who requalifies will get 500 SC after their review date. I'm sorry I cannot agree with your interpretation.

What is wrong with that, the Gold or Plat Comp only last's one year. That's how it reads in the TC's. Maybe Virgin is taking the view it will encourage more people to fly with them or buy more Flexi's to use the 4 Platinum Comp upgrades. I think the majority of people will give it to their partners so what is the cost of doing this? Maybe some extra lounge guests but that means possibly more people flying with Virgin to do that after ATA changes, some free baggage, some free upgrades if comp Plat, not much really.

A basic problem is that you give benefits to people who are platinum now not might be at some stage in the future. There is also that this interpretation gives nothing extra to someone who earns 1800+ SC in a year. That almost totally defeats the purpose of loyalty.

But it is what the T&C's say

If they mean that you need to earn the Status Credits to requalify for platinum, and then get another 500 Status Credits, then they should say that. But as it stands, it does not say that you need to get the status credits to requalify first.
