Complimentary travel insurance via Platinum credit card - Do I get a certificate to prove it?

Hi,

my HSBC Platinum VISA has complimentary travel insurance (incl. medical) if you purchase your return tickets on the card.

My question(s)

1. Has anybody had problems with the complimentary insurance, would you recommend I purchase additional/separate insurance?

2. How do I PROVE to a tour guide operator that I have this insurance cover?
According to HSBC, I don't need to inform them of my travel, just pay for the flights on the card and I'm automatically covered.


nb. Destinations heading to - USA / Peru / Arg / Brazil

I once had gotten a document "proving" the insurance cover for a trip to Russia. But that was American Express- worth trying, I would say.

No and No chance of me recomending anything - make your own decisions :)

maybe tricky regardless. but you should be ringing HSBC and ask them. Some of the insurance policies do tell you they will issue a certicficate if you ask them.
 
email a copy of the relevant PDS to your tour guide operator along with a copy of your proof of activating payment for the flights.
 
I have relied on cc insurance for about the last decade and thankfully never had reason to find out how sensible I was being, until ....

Couple of years back I had a medical emergency in US.
I had the good fortune to be staying round the corner from the best hospital in Philadelphia. I called the insurance emergency number and they basically said - "if you made the qualifying payments on travel bookings you are covered", but I had nothing in writing.
So I presented in emergency. The treatment I received could not be faulted and no one mentioned insurance or how the bill would be paid.
Of course they had my details and I eventually received the bills which were horrendous.
As well as the medical / hospital bills I had some other costs where I had prepaid / nonrefundable accommodation.
I sent the bills and other details off to the insurer with the appropriate claim forms and it was all sorted with a minimum of fuss.

Having had that experience for the next trip I contacted the insurer about getting a certificate before leaving, but they were reluctant unless it was to identify a "pre-existing condition" which the standard policy will not cover (and you should be aware the insurer will look for that in the claim).
Maybe negotiating cover for a pre-existing condition (in grown toenail?) could be a way to get a certificate augmenting the normal CC insurance, but I have not tried that.

For my ANZ Premium Card I was able to obtain a "Letter of Eligibility" from QBE. I'm waiting until they switch insurers to Allianz to request one for my next trip in June.
