Hi All,

Apologies if this already has a thread but I was unable to find one.

In the post this week we received a package from Qantas addressed to my partner, we open it up and it's a complimentary 12 month FF gold membership complete with membership card and bag tags. Her current status was Bronze and she has about 7k FF points and about 700 lifetime status credits. She has accumulated about 3000 FF points in flights over the past 12 months. So clearly not a regular flyer. I have attached the blurb that came with the pack.

I'm baffled (and a little jealous) as to why she got this? I'm sure there is a criteria that she must have met but I'm pretty puzzled. The unfortunate thing is that she's unlikely to do a lot of flying over the next 12 months, we do have a JQ flight booked in a few months and it would have been nice to use Qantas Club for that (I have an Amex Platinum Charge with Marco Polo Gold but I don't believe this will gain me entry unless I'm on a OW flight number).

Has anybody else unexpectedly received one of these? If so, are you a regular flyer?

Cheers, Ben

Where are you based? or rather the address listed on the FF account?

Her address was listed as Forest Lake, QLD which is where my Mum lives (we were living with her for a short time while we relocated from Sydney). Again definitely not an affluent or emerging post code.

Whats her status when you login to her account?

It's showing up as gold. I've attached her summary of point collection. The only thing she has done is recently linked her Woolworths Everyday Rewards Card to the account. She also has an ANZ FF Visa linked. I didn't think about this at the time but maybe it has something to do with that spend.

We're some Qantas gift Vouchers purchased last month?

No, have never purchased any of these.

I thought this was something that happened when one partner achieved WP1 or similar? But even then I suspect you had to select the recipient.

That would be partner Gold once you reach 2400 SC, which you can then allocate the recipient.

A friend of mine got the same thing. Has taken about 2 Qantas flights in the last year and scored free gold for 12 months. Very strange.

not so much to do with affluent, but there were reports of people in the Gold Coast area getting bumped to gold.. was just a thought..

Also did her renewal date change? the only thing might have been was someone gifted her Gold status?

Wonder if its to do the EK/QF partnership, has she redeemed any points for flights to Europe or anything like that in the past 12 months?

Very strange..
Checked my FF login I am still Gold, and checked Mrs account still QC Bronze. :(

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I was automatically upgraded to Gold when my partner reached a particular level at Platinum. I was linked to his account through my Qantas Club membership. But this one is really random?

The only major flying we did in the past 12 months on OW were on points that I converted from Amex MR to my Qantas Frequent Flyer account. Which was SYD-HKG(QF Y+) HKG-JFK(CX J). Nothing to Europe. I should also mention I am also Bronze so I definitely had nothing to do with this.

Was her QFF membership originally meant to expire on 31st Jan before this comp gold?

Do you get it as WP, or WP and 2400 SC? My interpretation of the wording on the QF website was that you got it at 1400 / 1200:

Frequent Flyer - About the Program - Platinum Benefits - Platinum

"If you have not already nominated complimentary Gold membership for your partner, when you reach 2,400 Status credit, [you have three additional options]"

You get it at 2400 SC. Any less than 2400 and you don't get it.

However I don't think it's ever been reported that you have to have 2400 and be WP - specifically referring to the minimum 4 flights on QF/JQ flight numbers.
My guess is that those reaching 2400 and crediting to QFF are likely to be getting those 4 squiggles without any problem.

Another AFFer, thewinchester also had the same. A promotion from QF upgraded him bronze to gold. Be happy

An ex partner perhaps. I once had to call QF quickly to get the gold upgrade reversed on my ex wife's account. Perhaps this person is unaware.
