Commercial Rescue participation ever happened to you?

Wow. What a great story.

AFAIK all (sea) vessels are required (where possible) to assist in a maritime emergency, I haven't head of commercial planes being drafted in to assist.

I can't say I have been in a similar situation, it does seem that it would be pretty rare for it to occur.

Commercial aircraft are often tasked to assist in similar circumstances, and are often the first on site whilst the dedicated resource gets prepared. Porabably happens a few time a year in Australia.

There was a case years ago where a BA (I'm pretty sure) flight was traveling over one of the Oceans and a passenger, looking out the window spotted a burning boat. The passenger let the crew know, location was radioed and the boat crew rescued. It was a trawler from memory.

I recall an Air NZ DC-10 being involved in rescuing a light aircraft (Cessna AgWagon) on a ferry flight from the US to Australia. The DC10 had extra fuel onboard due to it 'tankering' on its flight TE103 between NAN & AKL. Sadly Flight Engineer Gordon Brooks was killed in the NZ crash at Mt Erebus the following year.

There was a movie made loosely based on the incident called 'Mercy mission - the rescue of flight 771' however a lot of changes were made to the story.
