Which makes the US tipping culture seem reasonable and the Aussie non-tipping culture also seem reasonable.
Cost of living compared to wages is loosely comparible when you also factor in our public health and welfare benefits over the US model. The trouble for the OPs daughter is that she will be spending her lower US earned dollars in the higher priced AU economy which will be harder to bear than an Aussie student on exchange in the US (right now with virtual parity between both the dollars).
