With effect 30 May, Sydney sees 1 of its 2 A380 services replaced by a 77W. SQ 231 (midnight SIN-SYD) and SQ 222 (3pm SYD-SIN) are the affected flights. Aircraft will be used instead for India services (BOM or DEL). This will leave SQ 221 (9pm SIN-SYD) and SQ 232 (11am SYD-SIN) as the remaining flight pair where A380 will be used.

With effect 27 Oct (ex SIN) & 28 Oct (ex MEL), the sole A380 service to MEL will replaced by a 77W (SQ 227 and SQ 228). It is believed the aircraft will instead by used for AKL services.

who would have thought that 'supply n demand' would effect an airlines use of its various assets/aircraft on various routes!!

Thanks for posting the info dajop - whilst I LIKE the fact that you posted this info - I just can't bring myself to LIKE the post - I am sure you understand.

Noticed this as some of the flights that I was looking to book were pulling Suites with fare class F and thought it was a bit odd.

Sucks for the MEL regulars but I think its a good move on SQ. The 380 they send there sits on the ground for half a day before returning so it was hardly a efficient rotation.

Sad day. Interestingly the SQ website is saying that SQ232 will depart at 12:15pm next year and arrive at 5:20pm. Must be a mistake.

This is actually the correct timing under AEDT conditions. The time difference between SYD and SIN widens to 3 hours so all flights leave an hour later during AEDT times.

It's a little bit of an indication of the rising purchasing power of the developing world now that India can afford to fill an A380.

It's a bit of a strategy choice by SQ. For instance, they give each of the eastern seaboard Au cities a choice of three timings. That is a wonderful thing for travelling and optimising travel plans.

Actually I am sure A380 would have been flying sooner to India (by EK, if not SQ) if the Indian government/bureaucracy had allowed it. It's only recently that they've relaxed their restrictions. SQ's A380 service is actually a very slight reduction in capacity to India, as to each of BOM & DEL it replaces two 777 services timed 2-3 hrs apart (so 4 777's replaced by two A380's). But your point remains, though as it is only in relatively recent times that SQ services expanded from 1-2 daily to 3 daily 777s to both BOM & DEL.

Oh, and just a minor correction, it's actually a good thing that BNE gets a choice of three timings, MEL&SYD get four timings to choose from which is even better. :)

Yeah the move was announced pretty much together with the deregulations in March.

Anyway, someone tell SIA already and tell them that we'll take the 77WN as consolation on SQ231. Good opportunity to use that PPS connect :p

SQ have a fantastic reputation in India and will easily fill A380s. As the others have posted, it was only a matter of time once the Indian government allowed carriers to bring in the A380.

I wonder how they will do in the premium cabins... EK will be looking at operating 2 class A380's to India..

I'm astonished that SQ will no longer fly their A380 to Melbourne.

Obviously demand is down.... Whilst Scoot don't fly to MEL, they do fly to SYD, OOL & PER are they taking customers from their Parent airline ?

Also LH. They have a fair chunk of the India-USA market.

LH found a way around the ban with the 748 for the time being... I'm just wondering about the premium cabin loads though. If F sold well, EK would look at operating the 3 class config. Time will tell!

LH most certainly did. The 748 really helped them out there. I do think there is a fair amount of premium demand within the market though.

It's disappointing that MEL is losing an A380. Although good that the 77W is the replacement.

I don't know if demand is down that much, just probably "right sizing" after introducing a fourth daily service last year. Also I suspect it's not Scoot that's impacting SQ services, it's competition from all the other carriers who have also increased capacity to MEL on routes SQ service via SIN (including MH, CX, QF, GA, CZ, QR, JQ to HKT, AI, etc etc)

AKL demand is greater than MEL?

SQ will reduce to just one daily service SIN-AKL when the A380 comes online (from ~ 12 weekly now), but will codeshare on NZ's new service to provide alternative timing. Whichever way you look at 4 x 777 > 1 A380 or accounting for new NZ service 4x777 > 1 A380 + 1 777.
