Just got back from a trip via Miami, LA, Auckland and Brisbane.
- Miami is one of the worst signposted airports I've been to.
- But the Immigration officer actually welcomed me to the US (I think he was new on the job, there was a supervisor lurking in the background).
- The new fingerprint machines require all four fingers on LH, four fingers on RH, then both thumbs. A colleague who is missing a finger had gone through a week ago. The software couldn't handle this and had to be rebooted. much to his amusement.
- AA's baggage handling procedure for transit passengers is extraordinary. Once through customs you recheck your bag. This is a matter of passing it under a roped-off area to a group of baggage handlers. The woman who took my 20 kg nylon sports bag dragged it very slowly away by the tag attached to the zipper, ignoring the handles - what quicker way to break it. I thought of calling her back and protesting, but God knows what they'd have done to it out of sight.
-Despite being in J from LA (row 2), I found myself in the F section - overheard one of the FA's saying they were using any aircraft they could find for this route. Slept for 7 hours, service not that much different from F (eg blanket instead of doona) and a lot friendlier than AA. Thanks Qantas!
