Comfort 'plus' or is it a minus?

A few weeks back I jetted off on a USA holiday - 2 weeks spent between New Orleans and South Dakota. Yes, those 2 places do sound a bit odd. :p But first...

Somewhere on this site I remembered reading about a nice SC 'hack' of getting a lot more SCs for your buck, by booking on Delta's version of premium economy: Comfort+. It seemed too good to be true, I thought. Getting tons more SCs on flights, and possibly clutching on to VA GOLD for another year - without a dreaded expensive status run?!

I ended up booking BNE-SYD-LAX-MSY (New Orleans) / LAX-SYD-BNE, for under A$1900. At the time, flying Virgin direct from BNE was $1300+
I needed to get from NOLA to Aberdeen, South Dakota, so another great SC hack I read was to book the most non-direct flights possible. LOL. So I booked Comfort+ again, on flights MSY-ATL-MSP-Aberdeen / Rapid City - MSP-LAX USD 844. (AUD rate was way better 3 months ago, luckily. But I forget what it came to now)

I am feeling this post is just about Status Credits. o_O Oops. (Should it be somewhere else on a different thread?)
anyways... The trip earned me 495 SC !!! :D Check out the picture attached...

Delta's Comfort+ product is certainly NOT premium economy. It just gives you 5cm more legroom, and apparently a bigger pitch/recline. Though I didn't notice this. As I sat down and arranged myself it quickly became apparent that this was not an economy seat on SIA's fleet. Not even on SIA's rubbish old 777's they fly to Brisbane. The Delta seats had no extra cup holder, no handy USB, no space for your glasses, no hook for a coat or cable, and a very limited number of movies/shows on offer. Mid-flight I found the power point and USB placed between seats - as the lady next to me used it. She had to get on the floor to help me plug in my USB cable! Checking seats beforehand showed most middle seats vacant. Yay.
At check in, I overheard an American asking (demanding) an upgrade to Comfort+. Sure enough, on both flights, EVERY Comfort+ seat was full. :( On the return LAX-SYD flight, the flight attendant actually came to the Comfort+ section and advised that "plenty of empty seats and entire rows empty" in normal Economy; and suggesting some of us move back there! A few people did.
I guess for a US-based airline, you can't expect too much. Hell, just to get free drinks seemed to be something that passengers were surprised about! The bonus was the SCs... so I was grateful for that. Free WiFi for messaging was also a nice touch.

The holiday was great. I did a 4 day road trip across South Dakota to see Mt Rushmore, the Badlands, and the Black Hills. It was great fun!

Scott.

Isn't their Y+ called "Premium Select"? Comfort + is like UA's E+ I thought......

Delta call it Comfort Plus, at least domestically.

On longer flights there is complimentary liquor and an improved snack.
