Combining (pooling) luggage on Jetstar

If there are 2 of us travelling on the same PNR on a Jetstar saver fare, can we pool / combine our luggage allowance of 20 kg each? eg can one bag be 25 kg, and the other 15 kg? or must the maximum weight of each bag be 20kg? As much as I looked on the J* webpage, I could not find the answer...anyone? thanks

PS if you can point me to the relevant website page, that would even be better!!

I have had it applied previously at 20 kg each. The split as you mention was not acceptable.

Where and how it fits within the rules I have no idea.

Can you either call the ground handling agent or ask someone at JQ checkin next time you're going in or out of the particular airport. They are the only ones who can give you the answer. Don't even bother calling reservations.

We could try and pack 20 kgs in each bag to be on the safe side but we were planning to check in one large suitcase, and a smaller bag....not sure we could fit 2 big suitcases into the boot of the hire car (group C car).

We checked in at OOL to KIX flight, and we put both bags onto the scales together was no questions asked. I knew in my mind that my bag was 24kg and partners was about 14kg I think. Check in agent said nothing. BUT KIX to OOL diffrent story, we had to quickly re-pack, as both bags were not done together, I think in the long run make sure its the 20kg each.

Sometimes, however I'd say whatever one checkin agent says at a particular port would be indicitive of what the rest would do there. You could always note their name & if you get a different answer on the day tell them "we came into specifically to ask the question last Saturday & John/Mary told us this was the case".

Do you mean one of you checked in the lighter back first then afterwards the other person checked in the heavier one that was 'overweight'? I'm assuming the repacking was taking 'excess' kilos out of the heavier bag into your hand luggage as the lighter bag would have already been sent down the belt.

The problem being if the checkin agent added the 2nd bag at one piece for 24 kilos the system would automatically calculate 4 kilos excess baggage. The smart thing for them to do would be to look at the weight of the first bag @ 14 kilos then adjust the weight to 18 kilos so they could then enter the second bag at 1 piece for 20 kilos. They would still have the correct total weight for both suitcases.

I think the best scenario would be to both stick to 20 kilos each, failing that definitely checkin at the same time with both bags.

Once you start to deviate off the track you might just strike someone at checkin that can't see the wood for the trees & would insist that you have 4 kilos excess. Better to apply the KISS principle - keep it simple stupid - with all due respect of course.

On our somewhat infrequent JQ trips the Shrek family checks in 3 large Samsonite spinners between 6 of us, each weighs 23-25kg never had any excess charges either here or NZ. Happy travels!

Although at some ports where JQ outsource checkin to a contractor, the response might well be "who's Simon Westaway"?

I have spoken to quite a few people lately who've told me they were told by reservations to turn up to SYD Intl terminal 2 hours prior to departure for a SYD/SGN, or BNE Intl for BNE/DPS flight only to find out it goes from the domestic terminal as outwards customs is done at DRW.

Apparently JQ staff at SYD domestic T2 say "this happens all the time" so obviously not an isolated case

JQ itineraries clearly state terminal number on their itineraries but this fact is clearly lost on JQ call centres who are contractors & not JQ employees as such.

Note to passengers: trust your own judgement. If your itinerary clearly states "departs Sydney Domestic Terminal T2" then that's exactly what it does.

The other thing I did on the 1 occasion I flew Jetstar (to Hamilton Island) was buy the maximum amount of extra luggage one can with the ticket purchase.

I still had them try and charge at Melbourne Airport but when I explained I had paid for extra bagage they let go.

My view is that jetstar checkin staff are bonused on how much they charge people for extra luggage!

There should also be some kind of 4 digit SSR code that prints out on your boarding pass to reflect that. Always take your itinerary receipt confirming that you've paid excess as they can't argue with that, well looks like they do try.
