Is this a rule, that Ibis budget means no lifts? I've stayed in an Ibis budget that had lifts

Don't think that's a rule. The Ibis Budget Auckland Airport definitely has lifts.

Doyvid.

Rydges at Sydney Airport is where I always stay because of the fact it is just a short walk across the street to the terminal. I live in Wagga and always fly the day before for international morning flights - I don't want to get caught by fog or other delays. Prices vary depending on the day and the size of the room but I've paid from between $190 to $240. This might be pricey but I value the convenience. Certainly better than trudging out on that blasted (and often crowded) train from the city or paying a fortune for a taxi. Also I get a great view of the airport from my room :) You have to nominate that though or you could end up with a "courtyard" view. If you want something to eat that evening, there is a nice eatery at the bar - I wouldn't use the expensive restaurant, in my view the food is not worth the price. Or you can just walk over to the international terminal and have McDonalds :)

My wife is returning to Australia on EK408 (on a Qantas ticket) into MEL, then will stay in Mel overnight at an airport hotel and then departing the next morning on a Qantas domestic flight.

I have told her that she will collect baggage for customs as per normal and then she will need to hang on to the bags overnight and check them in again the next morning. Is that correct?

Correct. If the domestic connecting flight is the following day it's unlikely the oncarriage flight to her final destination will be visible when she checks in with EK.

Even if the bag was tagged through to the onward flight ex MEL it will still be on the carousel in MEL as all pax continuing on to a domestic destination must clear customs with their checked luggage.

As there are no departing flights at that time she wouldn't be able to bag drop it that evening as checkin is closed.

I have done this many times coming from PER through SYD en route to AUH, NOU, VIL and NAN and my bag has NEVER been checked through.
I have always had to collect it from the domestic sector and check it in again for the international sector the next day.

I was under the impression it could be checked through if the connecting flight was within 24 hours.
However I queried this with QF and was told bags will not be checked through if the flight leaves the next calendar day.

My experience was the same with VA connecting with EY en route to AUH.

The 24 hour thing depends on the airport eg it may be possible in SIN if flying BNE QF x/SIN UL CMB as Changi is always open for business whereas some airports have curfews or down time where there are no staff on duty so they don't want bags lying around unsecured.

Inbound is completely different to outbound. In Australia, luggage can NEVER be through-checked from an incoming international sector to a connecting domestic sector, regardless of the timing.

This is because PAX must claim their bag and assume responsibility for it through customs and immigration.
So you could never have bags through-checked from LHR-MEL-SYD.

When you fly SYD-MEL-LHR I assume you complete the domestic sector and board the first international sector on the same calendar day.

This doesn't seem to be a problem and I am not even sure this is limited to 8 hours.

It can be through tagged to your final destination within Australia however pax must always clear Customs with their bags on arrival at the first port of arrival in Oz.

Ground handling agents overseas don't get this bit and often tell pax that if bags have been tagged to final destination that's where they collect them.

The ibis Budget at SYDd airport has lifts and is a bit of a slightly higher standard than the ibis Budget MEL airport.
If you are like me, HLO, the ibis Budget MEL is great, if all you need is a place to be, ie have to be at MEL airport for an early am flight out, where you can just drop the room key into the box.
Hours of operation at the ibis Budget MEL airport is also limited, as after 22.30, you have to use your credit card to do the checkin, the staff might be there till 23.00, but those 2 are the only 2 downsides for travellers wanting ibis Budget rates at MEL airport, (1) not good if you have many bags, and (2), if your arrival time is the last flight of the night/early am. O, not forgetting the noisy aircond.
Other than those, its the cheapest spot at MEL airport within walking distance of the terminals.

Yes we were specifically discussing SYD.
