Coles gift card offers

When they fail to activate you should still earn the bonus points so there's no need to buy more with the same account.
I came here to ask this exact question. I cleared out the last 5 $100 gift cards at my local Coles yesterday. Then I went back today to see if they had restocked so I could get some more on my partner's flybys. But they only had the $250 ones.

I got five $250 ones, but one of them failed to activate. I was going to get another one to replace it, but then I had a hunch that I might still get the credit for the 5. So it's good to hear that will likely happen!

Yes it does ;)

I had a card that failed to load, took 3 staff to work out how to refund.

I purchased on Amex, refunded to my debit Mastercard and didn't scan fly buys for the return - Not sure that's even possible/required.

But got the points and the refund to my bank account while earning Amex points :D

I think you may have missed my point. Your suggestion would still means losing points I should be getting.

My focus is not the bonus points, I don't care about the bonus points that much. What I'm focusing on is the money laundering using AmEx aspect of this exercise:
  • If I pay $100 to ATO via most methods, I don't get any points.
  • If I send $100 from AmEx > Coles > ATO, AmEx generate SQ / VS miles, and Coles generates VA points.
And let me stress, I don't really care about the Coles generating Flybuys bit, that's not my focus, my focus is the bit where AmEx generating SQ / VS miles

Having to pay ATO, having to pay stratas, thousands of dollars every quarter (thanks to the Australian superiority of building apartments which leaks everywhere). If we buy one card at a time, it would take forever, or we would be asked to leave the stores 🫣

Far from money laundering

Money laundering was when you could/can buy EFTPOS cards on your Amex and then pay your Amex at the Post Office with the gift cards.

That's what I call manufactured spend
I always thought money landering implied that the initial funds were nefariously acquired

15% is a big commission. These must have a lot of commission from retailers and/or breakage. Also suggests there's still plenty of buffer when there's 5-10% in effective cashback via points awarded.

These particular gift cards are likely profitable enough but there's a reason they stopped including the TCN Kids and Teen (redeemable at JB Hi-Fi) and Restaurant gift cards in the 15% off promotions.

It is certainly annoying how almost all promotions these days are either 10% off or 20x points when for some of these gift cards they could easily be giving us more.
